CEIR reveals industry recovery in Q2 2023 Index results

The US exhibitions industry has sustained its recovery levels amid low cancellation rates, according to a new study.

However, figures from CEIR - Center for Exhibition Industry Research ’s latest index report for Q2 2023 predict the first six months of 2024 are expected to be challenging due to a slowing economy and cautious businesses.

It shows exhibitors were still 11.8% lower than during the same period in 2019, while real revenue was 14.5% behind – but it suggests recovery is in sight.

CEIR economist Allen Shaw said: “The positive momentum of participation in face-to-face trade shows will continue.

“Widespread B2B exhibition cancellation due to Covid-19 is a thing of the past.

“Normalization of the exhibition schedule back to pre-pandemic timing and the performance of completed events will continue to improve.”

He added: “Greater numbers of foreign participants will support additional recovery of volume of attendance and exhibitors.

“A full recovery for the industry is expected in 2024.”

Other figures include:

  • In-person cancellation rates at 0.6%
  • Exhibitors were 11.8% lower than in Q2 2019
  • Real revenue was 14.5% lower than the same period in 2019
  • Sectors expected to perform better in 2024 and 2025 – transportation, industrial/heavy machinery and finished business inputs
  • Sectors expected to slow down – consumer goods, retail trade, education

CEIR CEO Cathy Breden said: “CEIR research has documented an intent to return to face-to-face engagement at B2B exhibitions, and CEIR Index quarterly results continue to document the recovery is in progress.

“Each quarter, the Index is showing that more business professionals and exhibitors are coming back to the B2B exhibitions channel to meet their marketing, sales and business information needs.”
