Welcome to this edition of IA-ismo!
As we dive into September 2024, we invite you to catch up on our latest entries.
?? Top Story: Cursor – The IDE Revolutionizing Programming
This month, all eyes are on Cursor, an innovative fork of Visual Studio Code that’s reshaping the way developers approach coding by seamlessly integrating Artificial Intelligence into their workflow. Lauded by none other than Andrej Karpathy, Cursor has quickly become the talk of the tech world.
However, its subscription model and proprietary nature have sparked a shift among some developers, who are exploring alternatives like the ClaudeDev code extension or ZedAI (compatible with Mac and Linux). These tools offer a different approach, allowing developers to integrate Ollama with their local models while maintaining greater control over their environment.
?? How Does Generative AI Affect Your Memories?
Did you know that AI-generated images can influence our memories more than conversational AI? A recent study shows that image-generating AI can significantly increase the creation of false memories, altering how we recall events. The implications of this are profound, as the visual impact of AI-generated content on human memory is greater than we might think. Dive into the full study to learn more.
?? A Smart Ring Even Gollum Would Covet: Ringconn Gen 2
Move over, Samsung Galaxy Ring—there’s a new contender in the wearable tech scene! The Ringconn Gen 2, a next-generation smart ring, is making waves on Kickstarter at an early bird price of $199 (available until September 14, after which it will increase to $299).
What sets Ringconn apart? Beyond its competitive pricing—cheaper than the Oura Heritage (€329) and the Galaxy Ring (€449)—this smart ring boasts impressive features. It monitors heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and even detects apnea and sleep disorders. Plus, with a 12-day battery life and water resistance, it’s designed to keep up with your lifestyle, no matter how active.
?? ?? Regulations in Focus: California Leads the Way
California is setting the pace in AI regulation in the United States.
Recently, California passed Assembly Bill (AB) 1836, a groundbreaking law that requires explicit consent to create AI-generated replicas of deceased performers. Pushed forward by the actors' union SAG-AFTRA, this legislation aims to safeguard artists' image rights in the digital age, ensuring that their likenesses aren't exploited without permission.
More controversial is California’s SB 1047 AI Safety Bill, which has sparked debate across the tech community. Some view it as overreach, while others, including prominent figures like Elon Musk, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yoshua Bengio, see it as a necessary step. The bill mandates that AI companies such as Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic implement 'emergency switches' to disable their systems if needed, and holds them accountable for any “catastrophic damage” their AI might cause.

???????? [...] The first 1000 Agent Civilization
In an innovative leap, the SID project has successfully created an autonomous society of 1,000 AI agents inside Minecraft. These agents have not only developed their own economy and culture but have also established markets and even voted a constitution using Google Docs! We’re integrating our own agent into this fascinating digital world. Stay tuned! ??

???? [...] Automatic Papers
Sakana AI’s latest creation, AI-Scientist, is making waves by automating the entire scientific writing process—from generating ideas to responding to reviewer comments. Although the output isn’t quite up to standard yet, this innovation has sparked a lively debate about the future of automating the scientific process. Could AI be the next big player in research?
??[????] An AI-guided worm.
In another fascinating development, researchers have trained a model to guide light into optogenetically engineered worms, triggering responses that direct them towards a target. This approach hints at future treatments for conditions like Parkinson's disease, potentially allowing for precise adjustments of stimulation voltages to manage symptoms more effectively.
?? Tools for Developers: Nvidia ACE and Fine-Tuning Local
Nvidia continues to push boundaries with ACE technology for synthetic human NPCs, which is now being integrated into the first video game. The company has also unveiled a toolkit for RTX AI, introducing multi-fine tuning techniques on base models that can boost performance by up to six times. For developers, these advancements are game-changing.
???? Robotics: The Next Great Frontier. Neo Beta and Unitree G1
The Neo Beta and Unitree G1 robots have captured attention with their advanced AI capabilities for complex tasks. With the G1 priced at a relatively affordable $16,000, future rental options are also being explored, making cutting-edge robotics more accessible to a broader audience.
?? ?? Datacenters: The Road to Super Intelligence
Scaling AI requires serious infrastructure, and no one understands this better than Elon Musk. His colossal datacenter project in Memphis is a testament to his ambition. Meanwhile, Ilya Sutskever’s new startup, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), has already raised $1 billion, with a strong emphasis on AI safety and security.
As we look toward the future, the next frontier for datacenters could be in space, leaving the ocean floor behind. Microsoft, for instance, has decided to abandon its underwater datacenter cooling experiment due to the high costs involved.
?? OpenAI: “Coming Soon to Your Screens” – Orion and Strawberry
With over 200 million weekly active users, OpenAI continues to dominate the AI landscape. The company is seeking new funding and has announced plans to share its models with the U.S. government. This fall, OpenAI aims to roll out voice systems, and by year’s end, we could see the debut of GPT-NeXT, trained on 10,000 H100 GPUs. Their Strawberry project, a synthetic data generator, promises to enhance model accuracy, while the much-anticipated Orion is set to be their next powerhouse model. Also on the horizon is the launch of Sora—exciting times ahead!
?? Model News: Jamba and the Evolution of Diffusion
AI21 Labs’ Jamba 1.5 models, featuring a hybrid SSM Transformers architecture, are known for their speed, although their accuracy has left some disappointed. Meanwhile, diffusion models continue to break new ground, with one notable milestone being the creation of text using SED techniques for more efficient learning.
A recent paper demonstrated a generative model capable of creating the entire gameplay of DOOM in real-time at 20 frames per second on a single TPU. The AI-generated game was so realistic that users couldn’t distinguish it from the original, highlighting the future potential of generative AI in rendering virtual worlds. As Nvidia’s Jensen Huang aptly put it, In the future, no pixel will be rendered; all will be created with generative AI.
Other Developments in AI
Artificial intelligence remains at the forefront of the global agenda. The U.S. continues to lead the market, but Europe is making strides with a booming ecosystem, valuing its unicorn companies at €447.4 billion, up 3% from 2023. The EU is bolstering its technological expansion with a €5 billion investment in TSMC’s first chip plant in Dresden.
Medical devices are also seeing significant benefits from AI integration. DiagNose, for instance, uses sniffing sensors to diagnose diseases, and Dexcom’s Stelo, an FDA-approved glucose-monitoring device, will soon be available without a prescription. Brain-machine interfaces are advancing too, with Neuralink’s latest implant allowing a spinal injury patient named Alex to play Counter-Strike 2 using only his mind.
However, challenges remain. Ethical concerns have led 200 Google DeepMind employees to demand an end to military contracts, and former OpenAI researchers are sounding alarms about AI safety regulations. The controversy surrounding false accusations generated by Copilot against journalist Martin Bernklau and the wide salary gaps leaked at Microsoft (ranging from $40,300 to $361,500, with bonuses up to $1.2 million) keep AI squarely in the spotlight—for better or worse.
