i3S researcher elected lifelong EMBO member
The European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, announced that four Portuguese researchers have been awarded the lifetime honour of EMBO Member. Among them is Mónica Sousa, from i3S, recognised for her research excellence and outstanding contributions to the life sciences.
European Association funds i3S project on acute pre-leukaemia
The European Hematology Association (EHA) recently awarded one of its three Research Fellowships for Medical Scientists to Delfim Duarte, an i3S researcher and IPO-Porto haematologist. The 240,000 euro funding will allow Delfim Duarte to study the role of iron in the abnormal formation and differentiation of blood cells (clonal hematopoiesis).
i3S researcher receives grant to improve animal welfare
Researcher Ana Maria Valentim, from the University of Porto's Institute for Health Research and Innovation (i3S), recently received a grant from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), worth around 25 thousand euros. The project, now funded, aims to improve the use of analgesics to relieve pain in zebrafish and test new combinations.
Young i3S researcher receives grant from the European Federation of Immunology
Beatriz Pereira, a PhD student carrying out research at the i3S, recently won an EFIS-Immunology Letters Scholarship (EFIS-IL Short-term Fellowship) that will allow her to carry out a three-month internship in the Netherlands. The aim is to work with cutting-edge technologies and identify a new biomarker for better clinical and therapeutic monitoring of patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
i3S research into gastric cancer highlighted in the USA
The research carried out by the i3s group "Glycobiology in Cancer" was highlighted at the "Proteoglycans Gordon Research Conference: Discovery and Translation in Proteoglycan Research", which took place between 7 and 12 July in New Hampshire, USA.
Young researcher from U.Porto wins ON Foundation grant
Inês Vilela de Sousa, a young i3S researcher and student in the PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering at FEUP, has won an Education Grant from the ON Foundation, which will allow her to present her work on bone regeneration at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS), to be held in September in Aalborg, Denmark.
