I worked out what I needed to do for the rest of this year at Guzman y Gomez.

I worked out what I needed to do for the rest of this year at Guzman y Gomez.

If you can't explain what you do, you're probably doing too much.

I'm a business owner. I'm a contractor. I'm a Chairperson on boards and committees. I'm a volunteer. So when I'm asked "what do you do?" I feel myself sigh on the inside.?

Because it's not a simple answer.?

For most people, it's simple.?

"I'm a builder."

"I'm in admin with the government."

"I'm a project manager."

"I'm a hairdresser."?

For some of us it's like telling a long story with no interesting bits. Just a neverending list of stuff that keeps us busy.?

I could say, "I'm an entrepreneur." But that makes them think I own a Lamborghini or something. Or that I day-trade or do something with crypto.?

And while it's mildly entertaining when I describe all things I like to do with my time, it's become a problem with what I'm presenting of myself online.

Who are you online? Really?

I don't know about you, but I'm not on social media for fun. It stopped being fun back when I stopped playing Words with Friends and Farmville on Facebook.?

Social media is all business for me.?

It's where I share not just who I am, but why someone should work with me. The trouble is that when I have trouble explaining what I do in a real conversation, I'm going to also have trouble keep anyone on track with what I do online.?

Because I've been all over the place recently.?

Sunsets at Casuarina Beach.

Tips on using LinkedIn better.

How to write better newsletters.

Using TikTok to grow your business.

How to access venture capital.

Learning to be a better public speaker.?

And as I was walking on Casuarina Beach on Sunday night last weekend with the better half, I was discussing how this constant jumping around is making it hard for people who follow me, to follow what the hell I'm doing.?

But even worse than that - it's making it hard for me to keep up writing and designing so much damn content every week.?

  • 2 posts per day on LinkedIn
  • Up to 6 per day on X
  • A newsletter each week
  • Two blog articles each week
  • A long-form video production each week?

And each one of those things could be about almost any topic that came to mind during that week.?

Anyone in this situation could easily streamline what they're producing into something more singular.??

So as we continued that conversation at the beach, that spilled over into more conversation at Guzman y Gomez at Stuart Park afterwards, it become obvious to me that I was going about this all wrong.

Produce one piece of long-form content and then chop it up.

This is exactly what most of the influential people I follow closely online do.?

Dan Koe is perhaps the best example of this.?

  • He will write one script for a YouTube video.
  • That script then becomes the blog post on his website.
  • The script is then broken up into short 30-second videos that his team animates into YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikToks.
  • The article is then broken up into about 14 LinkedIn and Facebook posts.
  • They are broken up again into around 42 posts on X?

And the kicker??

All of that content started off as a part of a chapter in his book, The Art of Focus .

This means that he wrote a book about a year ago. That book then fuelled a year of content for his YouTube channel, his social media posts, his short format videos, and his website posts.?

One piece of ultra-long-form written text (the book) allowed him to make around 104 long-form written pieces of work over the year.?

He doesn't have to plan what he's going to write, because it's all there in either his book, his courses (he has a few ) or in things that he's written before that he's yet to reuse.?

He is a master of repurposing the work he's already done before.?

It all seems so easy.?

But the one thing I don't have is focus.?

And this brings us back to the beach and GyG conversation with my partner last weekend.?

When we're all over the place we can't do this stuff.

It's great knowing that I have 15 irons in the fire all at once.?

But it's not helping me get anywhere.?

I'm just spinning my wheels in mud and not finding myself any further ahead in June 2024 than I was in January 2024.?

So my partner asked me, "If you have to focus your content on just one or two things what would they be?"?

Right now my list looks like this:

Social Media

Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube

Systems

AI, Productivity, Analysis, Web Design, CRMs, Organisational

Content

Writing, podcasts, video, storytelling and graphics

Confidence

Public speaking, presenting, entrepreneurship and leadership

If I was to shuffle these things around to what I really love doing, there's really only a couple of things that they could all comfortably sit under - that just so happen to be the things that I love the most.?

And happen to align with my vision and mission in life.?

My vision: Help businesses save the world.??

My mission: To do this through free global online learning, local in-person education and premium private consultation and training in entrepreneurship, digital skills and access to capital.

So what are the two things that contribute most to this grand plan??

  1. Expanding the entrepreneurial capacity of Australians as the concept of the full time job continues to erode and AI begins to massively disrupt and wipe out industries and the jobs that rely on them.
  2. Help those who succeed to succeed even further through access to venture capital, angel investment and other forms of fundraising to grow their small ventures into large ventures that can save the world.?

Everything that I'm doing now sits under these two things.?

Every contract I hold or workshop I host aligns with these two things.?

And that gives me a hell of a lot of focus to move forward with.

Good on you mate. What's that got to do with the rest of us?

Good point. That all sounds great for me. But I don't write these newsletters just for my benefit.?

So I ask you now, what is your focus?

Do you have a vision for your life?

Do you have a mission??

I'm gathering that you probably don't.?

But I'll tell you now that every good thing that has come from my life in the last three years came from having a core understanding of what my whole reason for being on this planet is: To Help Businesses Save The World.?

If your reason for living is to raise children and give them the best possible chance to succeed and be happy in this life, you share a vision and mission with around 90% of the people on this planet.?

I'm asking you to dig deeper than that. To go beyond the obvious answer to why you're here.?

If that answer is because you believe that you are born to bring glory to Allah, or Jesus or Shankara Bhagavatpada Acharya, then what in your life is aligning to that??

If the answer is that you believe that you were born for something bigger and greater and more significant than just going to a job, getting paid, having children and paying off a mortgage, then what specifically is that greater thing? And what are you doing to find it??

It's a massive question. But trust me, when you work it out, everything in your life aligns, you find focus, and the answers to what you need to do come as easily as a casual conversation at sunset on Casuarina Beach with the person you love.?

And you might just work out what it means and how to live it out over a couple of tacos at your local Guzman y Gomez.?

Adiós!

That's all for this weekend. Just one short read about working out why you're here and what you should be doing. Nothing too big... (rolls eyes...)?

If you're not getting value out of these tips, please consider unsubscribing.?

I won't mind and there are no hard feelings.

And if you are enjoying this newsletter, the best compliment you could pay me would be to share it with one person who you think would benefit from it.?

See you again next week.

Cheers,

Dante

Was just listening to audiobook - GRIT from Angela Duckworth - similar concepts about life vision and aligning everything you do to that. Thanks as always for your insights Dante.

It’s interesting you are quoting GyG in the story. GyG is one of the good example of people becoming successful after chasing what they really like. One of the founder of GyG is an ex-fund manager from the states. Started on 2006 now they are planning to hit the sharemarket with $2.2 billion valuation. Great article ?? Dante St James

Definitely get this… I have a 1 for 4 rule, that is create content once that you can use in at least 4 different ways, for example email updates all chopped up for socials, blogs, videos, events etc.
