I Worked as a Fixer for Buried Worlds: Voodoo's Dark Magic
Last year (2019) I worked as a fixer for the Travel Channel. I was hired for the Haiti episode of their new series "Buried Worlds" presented by Don Wildman. The international series explores hidden and literally buried secrets that exist in various places around the globe.
Since the Haiti episode is called "Voodoo's Dark Magic", I asked, and was ensured by the producers that the episode would be developed with the utmost integrity and respect for Haitian culture, but as we all know, much can change in the editing room.
As a "fixer", my responsibilities included helping identify and interviewing expert contacts, recruiting local people to help the crew, providing help to scout locations, obtaining signatures and access rights, and the handling of all travel and production logistics. While participating in daily production meetings, I was invited to also participate in front of the camera as one of the people whom the host Don Wildman would "meet" when he got to Haiti. Of course, I was all in!
I started working with the pre-production team while I was in the States, participating in multiple conference calls and receiving a flurry of emails a day for several months, then was flown to Haiti and met up with the production crew mid-August.
Literally upon meeting the crew for the first time at the Port-au-Prince's international airport, and helping them through customs with hundreds of pounds of equipment, we boarded a small flight directly to Cap-Haitien in the country's north. That is where where most of the shooting would take place for this episode.
It goes without saying that this was by far the biggest production team I have ever worked with in Haiti as shots were captured with multiple cameras, extraordinary drone shots, and next-level production techniques.
I'm highly anticipating this episode and will write again after I have seen it.
