I Wish They'd Shut Up About...

I was talking to HR Source CEO Mary Lynn Fayoumi on a live stream last week in preparation for my keynote at Altogether HR 2024 . She asked about what trends I'm seeing in the world of recruiting. Two came to mind. You won't be surprised at all.

AI (duh) and the pullback on investment in DEI roles.

The reality here is that if you subscribe to any recruiting or HR technology or marginally related field's email list, you have definitely seen this headline. There's a lot and nothing to say about AI, so let me tell you what I think about this DEI conversation right now.

The people who actually cared about doing the right thing are still doing the work and don't get any of the headlines. I'm talking to practitioners of change that are working to create true equity every single day. They are more motivated than ever - especially with an election coming up. They're investing in training, surveys, and tangible ways to create change.

But still, these so-called "news" hubs are sensationalizing the layoffs and I really wish they would shut the f*ck up. Yeah, I said it.

Let's stop sensationalizing and highlighting an outcome we don't want. I want to live in a more equitable world. Let's focus on what we can do, not the consequences of bad leadership in this country. Which, to be fair, has always existed. They were just put under pressure for a short time and now think they can get away with "disinvestment."

No matter what you call it or their intent, I want to read more stories about people who are marching forward. Organizations that are making an impact across barriers. I want to know the work the people who are doing the damn thing are taking on.

My contribution to taking on the other problems? Well, I try to come up with one every week. I post them on my blog - you can subscribe here to get them delivered to your inbox. In case you missed one, here's what I came up with over the last month.?

I love this idea, but what about actually starting a spotlight? If anyone knows people who are going forward with the march, it's you. I think you're well-placed to bring forward these stories and voices.

I just said this to a client over the weekend…focus on what we CAN do….not the 50 things we can’t do or 2736 things we are told we can’t do. All we can control is what we can do…amen Katrina Kibben!!

Yes! Need to spotlight those who are doing the work and are making a difference!
