“I wish my board was here, they need to learn and understand this”

This was the feedback presented from the delegates who attended the E2i seminar focused on employee engagement to drive operational excellence last week.

The key findings from the two days concluded that people engagement was found to be right at the heart of the change and continuous improvement agenda for leaders and managers. Unfortunately, the key people in the organisation who set the behaviours and culture – senior leadership, was viewed as often being disconnected from sustained employee engagement when driving improvement and major change programmes.

‘HR’s Fluffy Stuff’

A clear message, although sometimes provocatively delivered, was that employee engagement was not ‘the realm of HR’ but key skill and ability for the organisation at every level, top down.

With 40 attendees from manufacturers such as BOSCH, BAE Systems, Johnson Mathey, James Walker, Milliken, Voith and others many felt that there needs to be a deep understanding of sustaining employee engagement practices by the senior management team.

Flying in to speak from Holland was Philip Holt of Philips, Joseph Paris of Xonitex Germany, James Lyons of Boston Scientific Ireland, and Eilish Henry of Sisu Northern Ireland. Also thanks to Dig Woodvine of Xcl, John Oliver (the legend), Julian Wilson of Matt Black Systems and Sue Mclay of Rolls Royce, who were a little more local!

On the first evening networking dinner we also found out some truths and lies with the attendees. Delegates revealing some interesting truths such as being a stock-car driver, international BMX biker able to do the splits over the back of two chairs – money can’t buy this kind of evening

At the end of two days, after numerous breakouts and group activity with presentations, discussions and debate, each delegate gained new ideas and approaches as well as sharing their own experiences and concerns. The final activity was the creation of the individual engagement roadmap created by each attendee.

E2i seminar also reached the highest on our net promoter score so far this year so thanks to all the speakers and case studies. To the team at True North Excellence – Great Job!!!

Continuous improvement for leaders is key, if they don't develop then how can they lead in a growing environment! The disconnection between leaders and their employees is also very bad for any business, All employees need to feel a sense of belonging to perform well and achieve what is expected from them, the engagement/interacting between leaders and all employees is paramount to a business and its success. Jon...I want to come on the next workshop like this, looks great.

Sounds like a great workshop but then when have you not created a great event ? A great key learning summary .... when we look at the really successful CI programmes within DuPontSA high levels of employee engagement was a key factor. In fact I can remember presenting at one of your UK/US Manufacturing Summits about how the leadership role had been to create dissatisfaction and a desire for change within the "jeans" at all levels. So yes our learning from a number of process plants fully aligns with your summary.

Hi Jon, it was a pleasure and an honour to speak at the E2i Seminar and I was humbled to be on the same 'stage' as my fellow speakers. Thanks for organising it and I can certainly recommend it to others.
