I Wish Black History... Was History. By: Al Gardner

As Black History Month unfolds each year, it brings with it a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of the Black community to America's rich tapestry and societal progress. This annual celebration, now deeply ingrained in our cultural calendar, traces its roots back to the visionary work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson, often hailed as the "Father of Black History," dedicated his life to illuminating the overlooked achievements of African Americans. Born to formerly enslaved parents in Virginia in 1875, Woodson pursued education fervently, eventually becoming the second African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University. His groundbreaking efforts culminated in the establishment of "Negro Achievement Week," later evolving into Black History Month, during the Omega Psi Phi National Conclave in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1926.

?While Black History Month stands as a vital tribute to the past struggles and triumphs of the Black community, its continued necessity underscores a broader societal imperative. Despite strides in recognizing Black achievements, the curriculum in many educational institutions often relegates Black history to a mere footnote. This oversight undervalues the remarkable contributions of countless individuals beyond the well-known figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, and Rosa Parks. Indeed, America owes a debt of gratitude to the numerous Black inventors, scientists, artists, activists, and leaders who have shaped our nation's history. From the innovations of Granville Woods and Madam C.J. Walker to the courage of Claudette Colvin and Bayard Rustin, the roster of Black trailblazers is extensive and diverse.

?Looking ahead, my ?hope is for a future where Black history seamlessly integrates into mainstream historical narratives. The aspiration is not merely for inclusion but for complete incorporation, where the stories of Black Americans are interwoven throughout the annals of history. Such a paradigm shift requires a collective commitment to acknowledging the full spectrum of human achievement, unbound by racial delineations. As we reflect on the significance of Black History Month, let us not only honor the past but also commit ourselves to building a future where the contributions of all individuals, regardless of race or background, are celebrated and cherished as integral threads in the fabric of our shared heritage.

Here here. Thank you for your astute, thoughtful and eloquently stated piece. I am sure you know my passion for (proper) history so I can hardly contain myself whenever I come across something as praiseworthy as this. Oh, and I am taking a deep dive into a particular time-period with none other than W.E.B DuBois. I'll have a report when the time is right. LOL
