I Went Backwards Today

I Went Backwards Today

Bear with me...there's an important lesson here...

On Friday I posted and update about the importance of a morning routine that helps you be your best version of yourself every day. This morning, I ran the same 5k as I did on Friday, at roughly the same ambient temperature, at about the same time of day, with the same elevation change, but my time was 28 seconds slower. So roughly 9 seconds slower per mile, which may not sound like much, but that was a 1.7% reduction in my performance. Why is this important?

There are many parallels in life and work...the same principles apply. During the week last week I was eating healthy, in bed early, up early, exercising daily and drinking very little - and for me I ran a good time. Friday night the weekend came. I had a wonderful date night with my wife, enjoyed a 22oz Ribeye, a few cocktails, and a healthy glass of wine when we got home. Saturday night was a double date with great friends...chips and salsa, enchiladas and beer...so Sunday morning when I ran the same run I always do, my performance suffered by 1.7%.

To be clear, I had a great weekend and believe you have to work hard and play hard...life is short. But this morning I actually felt like I ran harder and pushed myself more than Friday, however, my results lagged. I just could not perform quite as well after 2 nights of less discipline and focus as I did when I was being more disciplined and focused.

My question to you is this...are you preparing to show up with your best self every day? If you could just gain 1.7% everyday for the number of days you have left, what would that look like? There is a compounding effect of showing up every day as the best version of yourself.

In that context, I would encourage you to ask yourself these questions:

What do you want? What is your ideal life?

Why don't you have it today?

What do you need to change in order to have it?

The truth is, your routine in your personal life, your systems and processes at work, they are already perfectly designed...perfectly designed to give you the results you are currently getting. If you want different results, you need a different routine, or different systems and processes.

I spend almost every day of my life helping entrepreneurs answer those questions, find the path, and teach them a set of simple, practical tools to bring discipline and accountability to their journey to living their ideal lives.
