"I want to write a blog about Taylor Swift's financial plan. Can I snag pictures of her off Google?"
Question from a subscriber: "I want to write a blog about Taylor Swift's financial plan. Can I snag pictures of her off Google?"
Nope.
Sorry.
You can not just download and use pictures, images, etc.
This is somebody else's intellectual property and they have legal rights to dictate who uses it, how, and what the price is for each usage type (billboard, social media, website, etc.)
This applies to all imagery, but be especially careful with pictures of famous people.
Either 1) buy the license to the content or 2) ascertain that it is Creative Commons Licensed.
Take these actions TODAY:
- If you want freebies, there are Creative Commons Zero License (CC0) images on the Pexels or Unsplash websites.
- If free images aren't suitable, you may have to buy from sites like Shutterstock or Getty images.
- Whenever you use an image, save the licensing information. Make a folder and save a screenshot, as well as the date you accessed it.
- Plagiarism is also a legal risk, and I see financial advisors violating the rules all the time. See my article about how to properly cite content.
?
It's a pain, but better safe than sorry. Take the extra step avoid misappropriating other people's intellectual property.
Yeah?
