In June 2013 I was made redundant from a job I was actually enjoying since leaving the police service as a detective after 10 years.
In July 2013 my second daughter was due to be born, I had no job, a heavily pregnant partner and an ex-wife who my eldest daughter lived with and no way of paying maintenance, you can imagine where my head was at.
One afternoon I heard an advert on local radio, Radio Norwich, the home of Alan Partridge, they were looking for business sales executives and that was something I knew I could do standing on my head, however, I didn’t want to go back into sales.
When I left the Police I was forced back into sales with a Vodafone Platinum partner, doing B2B sales, because again needs must, however, I got straight out after having a heart attack through the stress I was hitting my targets but the company squeezed us sales guys for a stretch target, and so on. I was 34 years old.
But, heart attack or not, if I didn’t get a job and support my family I would surely cause myself to have a second!
I contacted the radio station that afternoon, it was Wednesday, I was in their offices on Friday morning having an interview.
0930 was my interview, 1030 I was out of the door and 1130 I was home walking the dog and my mobile rang and I was offered the job, I was even given my first week off as my daughter was due on Monday.
Dreams and wishes do come true, or so I thought!
My daughter was a week late, so after my first day at my new sales job, my partner goes into labour, after an all-nighter my beautiful daughter Ruby arrives the following morning.
To cut to the chase though, I'm now into my new job as a sales guy, new daughter in my arms and the pressure is mounting that I need to put food on the table and pay the bills.
I literally had 2 days off with my family and was straight into sales mode, then disaster struck.
I actually found what I had to work with. The database of clients and leads was awful, I quickly deduced that the 2 sales guys either side of me would rape and pillage the database of the cursed chair that I was sat in every 6 months when my predecessors left either through underperforming or unable to hack the stress of the job.
I needed a new way to bring in clients, I assessed what everyone else in the team was doing and saw a clear window of opportunity, I mean it was so big we could have plastered Alan Partridges face all over it and still have space for his name and novelty slogans.
What amazed me, even more, was the fact that no-one was doing what I was about to do, not even the radio station was making the most of their digital footprint.
So I jumped online, used my plethora of detective skills and brought myself up to speed on Twitter and LinkedIn, because let's face it, every business in this day and age was on Twitter, easily contactable and every decision maker had a LinkedIn account, can you see what I've done there already?
