"I WANT to like this person..."
"I WANT to like one of my team members. Can I create a connection this late in the piece?"
From our?#asktheteam?series.?Ask?your big work questions.
The answer is yes,?if?you embrace a fresh perspective and a genuine intention to connect. Here's why.?
In some organisations – for example, select emergency?teams – leaders are not allowed to lead a team member unless they have "genuine affection" for them. That's because their relationship orchestrates how strongly they operate as a team. There can't be any hesitation in helping each other out.
And while we don't all work in emergency teams, the same effect applies across all leader-team member relationships. If we don't naturally connect with someone, we're less likely to put the time into our relationship. We might treat them less warmly, go to them with fewer opportunities, and put off the necessary but tough conversations with them.?
But that doesn't mean we can't flip the script. In fact, quite the opposite.

Mattering is connection
The science of Mattering connects people at a profound human level.
When people feel that they Matter, they are more likely to actively engage in their work and communities, create meaningful relationships, and experience a sense of belonging. By embracing the science of Mattering, we can create workplaces where every person feels seen, heard, and valued – connected.
