'I want to be a Fireman' Daddy
Some people are lucky. They know early on what their 'career dream' is; to be a doctor, a lawyer, an entrepreneur, a ski instructor, a fireman. I've envied my friends who 'just know'. But it still doesn't come easy (the majority of the time) and they have to work damn hard to make it happen.
Others like me, also have dreams but our dreams aren't as clear. But that's ok too. We just need to be clear on the pillars that support our dreams. The trick is to identify which pillars are important to you and use these as a blueprint when you're assessing career options.
A bit cliche but think of a 3 legged stool, you need all 3 legs to be stable otherwise it will topple over. Actively evaluate how strong it is on a regular basis after all, a career can last a lifetime and can't be wasted. For what it's worth, here are my three 'legs':
1) Be inspired & motivated - and believe in the company/culture to be inspirational & motivational in return
2) Build a legacy - it can't JUST be about climbing the ladder and earning more. Are we proud as individuals/teams of what we're achieving and will there be lasting value
3) Be happy - happiness could be defined as 'having something you love doing, with people you love doing it with whilst having something to hope for'
Food for thought.... I hope....
