"I want crystal clean water and air"
The US Presidential election of 2020 is going to be one of the most followed election in world history. A lot is riding on this election, at least for those of us who have studied science and/or have any understanding of the facts about climate change, i.e. our planet is changing and it is becoming increasingly hostile for the survival of the human species and other forms of life. When asked about his thoughts about climate change and what were his plans to tackle the effects of it, the US President Donald J. Trump replied "I want crystal clean water and air, I want beautiful air, we have the lowest carbon...".
In the past 4 years, the Trump Republican administration has accelerated policies to maximize the use of fossil fuels, eliminated the regulatory systems, which somewhat reduce the effects of fossil fuels on the climate, and they have been perfectly open about this, whilst making climate change into a political issue. This issue, like many others, has divided the American public along party lines, so much so that even Joe Biden denounced his support to the Green New Deal, in order to appease the electorates, who would be deemed as moderate and might consider voting for him, if he commits to not supporting the "far left" demands of adopting climate change policies.
This Presidential election, is going to be one the most pivotal moments in the fight for environment conservation. Wall Street and Corporate America have already started publishing their forecasts, by predicting a drop in stock market if Biden wins and a jump if Trump wins. Their choice has been made very clear, either support us, the corporations (that support you by paying your salary) or support a Green New Deal, that would make life possible on Earth for your future generations. Such short term thinking is what has brought us to the brink of these crisis. If we continue on this path, worrying only about the short term gains of the corporations we work at, there might not be a future to aspire for. We need to speak out, follow the science, look past the dogma and the propaganda, come together, talk to our bosses, have a conversation with our colleagues, discuss the issues of climate change as something that affects us. Because no matter how cool Elon Musk makes his portfolio by sending space missions to establish colonies on Mars, we CANNOT survive on another planet.
To all my American friends and colleagues, please go out and vote this November. A lot of us are counting on you.
