I want to be controversial (for your benefit)

Whilst I appreciate a lot of business people are doing things tough, I feel they may be letting themselves down if they are not using this time to
Survive – Revive – Reformulate
Almost all articles, blogs etc that I have been reading recently are all saying things such as “business will not return to the way it was” or “prepare for the new normal”. If you have not planned for the cessation of government support, I would ask “how sustainable is your business?”
Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending on whether you are a half full or half empty person) recessions or business downturns are a great opportunity to refocus your business. When things are going well (or we think they are), we tend to get caught in the comfort factor and just continue to travel along the same way.
If you are still in business, and I hope you are, you should be congratulated for surviving. Whilst the pandemic has been terrible for some industries and some businesses, it has created your opportunity to reformulate your business to refocus.
Some questions you should be asking yourself, NOW:
- What have I learnt from the last 3 months?
- What has worked well (and been profitable)?
- What has not worked well (and generated losses)
- What do I know about the future – one definite is, at some time and some scale, the government support must cease or reduce
So, what parts of your business model and plan need to be discarded and what parts need to be nurtured.
Are your business plans stress tested for the future environment? Have you updated your strategies to cater for now, and the future? Is your action list both achievable and realistic? Are you achieving your targets and are you being accountable?
Stage One may be to realise you cannot do everything yourself or that you do not / cannot ask yourself the correct questions. Stage Two is to accept that often, as leaders, we are very good at holding others to account but may not hold ourselves to account. Based on my 35 years of business management and organisational leadership, I am happy to see what help I may be able to give to assist you and your businesses revive and reformulate.
The key to coming out of the current environment will be how successfully you will be transitioning and transforming.
