I Walked off site!
Mike De Araujo
Senior Industrial Construction manager SME All Disciplines JESA, Morocco
This Covid has really gotten stuck with the world. I was employed on a 2 year contract in Guinea Conakry (Engineering Construction manager)but due to Covid risks my contract was expired and I returned home to South Africa on 18 March 2020. Thank the Lord Almighty I have been physically saved from the pandemic until now. But sitting at home not earning an income really wrecked our savings as bills and lively-hood still needed to be maintained. I was fortunate to get a new job locally and was employed as 16.2 Project manager on a project that started in December 2019 and was ultimately resumed after lock-down. Coming on site I realized the project was in deep trouble and I would have to mitigate so I stepped in with some changes to accelerate the progress. No sooner had I started implementing the needed steps to pull back the already late project when I was suddenly stopped in my tracks! The EPC and sub contractor had entered into an agreement to utilize local community for the project thus helping and empowering the local community. Some of my changes would include sourcing resources from outside the community as they did not have some equipment urgently needed! They could acquire them but at the time we had run out of float or fat as we know it and time was of the essence! Needless to say I had a shouting match with the local representative from that community1 I did not shout, I was shouted at and warned that I can not just walk in there and start to change things. Her name was Jennifer! I politely asked her not to threaten me as she promised they will come shooting! The following week we had a meeting with the PSC who represents the local community from a board directorship point of view and lo and behold, I was told if I did not stop immediately they would come shooting! Now after two threats of being shot I decided the money for this job was too little and I am not going to be shot for this whole fiasco"So I walked off site and resigned!" South Africa has a big problem with people not understanding Business!" Would you have walked off or taken the chance? I am good at conflict resolution but only if I am granted a fair platform to deal with it! Would you have walked off?

4 年The problem with local communities is that they are entitled and fo not deserve the job opportunities thrown at them when millions are without work. They are generating interested in their own demands and sabotaging projects and feel justified in doing so. Both frustrating and unnecessary
