One of the benefits of being a remote Salesforce developer is that I can work from anywhere with good internet. I try to take advantage of this perk as much as possible.
So I visited Hawaii for the 1st time. This is a story about what I learned from my visit and what advantages Hawaii offers for Salesforce developers.
I always thought that from the East Coast flying to Hawaii is expensive and distant, like a space mission to the moon. Honestly, the trip duration and distance was not bad at all; therefore, I want to lay it out for you.
- Airline: Delta (because of free WiFi)
- Price: $750 (slightly more expensive because I had flexible return days)
- Total flight time: 11 hrs
- Route: Washington DC (IAD airport) ?? Atlanta ?? Honolulu ?? Molokai
- Time Difference between Washington DC and Hawaii: 5 hrs
I spent 7 days in total in Molokai, the 5th largest island, and here are my 3 favourite things (the 3rd reason is the best!):
- RICH PENSIONERS CLUB: most of the visitors to Molokai are retired self-made super-millionaires from Alaska and the West Coast. They like to hunt and fish here for a few months a year. They bought $200,000 to $1,500,000 properties for cash (yes, mortgage is a foreign word to them). They like to hang out in the jacuzzis in the Kananikai resort and grill their fish or deer.I talked to a nearly dozen such millionaires and they were all open about how they made their wealth and what kind of investments they are making right now. In Maryland, where I live, it is impossible to meet such a concentration of wealthy and open people.
- FRUITS: I have traveled to over 50 countries. In Hawaii, I discovered the most delicious fruits, especially mangos, papayas, passion fruits, and guavas. The vitamins and juices explode like fireworks in your mouth with every bite. I was picking fruits from beaches and streets. Next time I am in Molokai I would like to just live off of mangos!
- TIME DIFFERENCE: My work started at 4 am Hawaii time (9 am Washington DC time) and I wrapped up my day by 11 am. The time difference forces one to wake up early! In time for lunch, one can enjoy the rest of the day with personal Salesforce projects. Is not this a digital nomad’s paradise? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Based on this trip I set myself a goal to save up enough money to buy a condo studio in Molokai that I will rent on Airbnb. It will earn $2,500 to $4,000 per month depending on season. In between I will come to stay for a few weeks at a time. Enjoy remote work as a Salesforce developer to the fullest.
