I Used to Be ________: Navigating the Past & Embracing the Present to Forge the Future

In life, one constant is change. While many embrace it, change often brings about losses—some monumental, some smaller, yet significant in their own right.

Whether it's a change in career, an empty nest, or recovering from a trauma, these transitions force us to confront the reality: "I used to be __________."

In the sections to come, we'll delve into mini-case studies from my client's that highlight the struggles and solutions people like you have faced.

Acknowledge the Loss

It is easy to try to move forward too quickly without really coming to grips with what has been lost. It could be a role you cherished, a relationship that you thought would last a lifetime, or a skill that you can no longer apply.

Allow yourself to grieve; it's a natural part of the healing process. Being honest about your losses paves the way for genuine transformation. By confronting and acknowledging your feelings, rather than suppressing or dismissing them, you create an emotional landscape where growth and renewal can take root

Mini Case Study: Identity Crisis in Transition Whether leaving the military or stepping away from a long-term role in healthcare, individuals often find themselves facing an identity crisis.

The question "Who am I without this role?" is common across professions and needs acknowledgment for meaningful progression.

In writing our stories we know that learning how to embrace change is vital.

The Duality of the Past

Your past is not merely a set of experiences to be discarded or disowned. It's a foundational part of you that has shaped your values, perspectives, and even your quirks. Learn to honor your past while still making room for new opportunities.

It's not an either-or situation but rather a balancing act that involves integrating the old with the new.

This integration allows you to carry forward the wisdom and lessons learned while freeing you to embrace new experiences and perspectives without guilt or reservation

Mini Case Study: Leveraging and Shedding the Past Be it elite military members, executives, emergency medical practitioners, or entrepreneurs understanding how to harness the best of the past while letting go of its limitations is a vital skill.

Each group faces unique challenges, but the need to leverage and shed the past remains universal. In writing about our past, we can learn how to finally let go of its hold on us.

Embrace the Present

While pondering over what was lost, it’s crucial to be rooted in the now. Embracing the present means taking stock of your current assets—skills, relationships, opportunities—and building on them.

The present moment is where change actually occurs; by fully engaging with it, you increase your capacity for action and decrease the likelihood of paralysis.

Mini Case Study: Present Adaptability Professionals from all walks of life, especially high-stakes fields, demonstrate exceptional aptitude in adapting to present challenges.

The here and now provide not just constraints but opportunities for growth. Even though we want to "live as our future self" we still must actively embrace the present... Be in reality. That awareness is what leads to sustainable change.

Redefine Your Identity

Once you acknowledge your loss, the next phase is to redefine who you are and what you stand for. This involves revisiting your values, beliefs, and what truly brings you fulfillment.

Keep in mind that your identity is fluid and multi-faceted, capable of evolving and adapting over time. The roles you take on, the skills you acquire, and even the challenges you face all contribute to a dynamic self-concept that isn't confined by past labels or experiences.

Mini Case Study: A New Sense of Self Entrepreneurs, specifically, often have to redefine their identities after encountering significant changes. Their experiences prove that identity is fluid and continually evolving.

The saying 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade' was designed to help people see their circumstances from a different perspective. Its goal to help move one past their present reality into a creating a new one.

Remember, your identity is what and who YOU are, not what someone else says or thinks about you.

You are not your past, you are merely a product of your past and with all products, they sometimes need to be updated or upgraded...

Craft a Plan for Moving Forward

Strategic planning is not just for businesses. Your life, particularly when navigating through a loss, could benefit from a robust plan.

Engage in a form of strategic life planning—assess where you are, define where you want to go, and plot how to get there.

A well-thought-out plan provides structure to your goals, making them achievable and less daunting.

Mini Case Study: The Planning Imperative Entrepreneurs and executives, with their experience in strategic decision-making, understand the importance of a well-laid plan. Even when such plans crumble, their existence offers valuable lessons for future endeavors.

We have all experienced times when our best plans fall short, although without ever planning, your goals are sure to fail. Planning creates a map. When you take a wrong turn with a map, it's easy to get back on the path, however without any map, you'll have no sense of the right direction.

Take Measured Steps

Once your plan is in place, the journey begins. In your travels, you'll encounter new experiences, form new relationships, and develop new skill sets. Each step, no matter how minor it appears, is a vital component of your larger journey. The key is to be consistent and intentional, building momentum over time.

Mini Case Study: Progress, Not Perfection From corporate restructuring affecting executives to the significant life changes faced by elite military members, every journey starts with a single, often uncertain, step.

Yet...

It's the cumulative effect of these steps that lead to transformative change.
