A Call for Help: My Son’s Workplace Struggle

It was August 2023 when my youngest son, Dominic—24 years old at the time—called me from Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. He was facing serious challenges with his employer, who was engaging in unfair labor practices. Like many employees, he wasn’t fully aware of his rights and felt powerless.

Fortunately, with 27 years of experience in the corporate world, I had extensive training and involvement in industrial relations disputes. I coached him through the process, helping him understand his rights and the necessary steps to take.

A Father’s Guidance and a Turning Point

By December 2023, he was summoned for a hearing. Within just one hour, the employer conceded that they were in the wrong and paid him out exactly what we had calculated he was owed. It was a victory, but it also meant that as 2024 began, Dominic was unemployed.

Facing a New Challenge: Unemployment in South Africa

Being a white male in South Africa, finding employment posed additional challenges. The job market wasn’t in his favor, and he needed an edge to stand out. This was where my LinkedIn expertise came into play.

The Power of LinkedIn: A New Beginning

In January 2024, I helped him create and optimize his LinkedIn profile. This marked the start of his LinkedIn journey. I provided training on how to strategically position himself, engage with the right networks, and leverage the platform for job opportunities.

By March 2024, an employment agency in The Netherlands reached out to him.

From South Africa to The Netherlands: A Life-Changing Opportunity

Fast forward to May 2024, and Dominic relocated to The Netherlands. Not only was he now living in a country that offered peace of mind, safety, and security, but he was also earning a salary five times higher than what he was making in South Africa. It was a complete transformation—one made possible by LinkedIn.

In December 2024, he returned to South Africa to get married, to his fiancée who had joined him in The Netherlands in July 2024. Their lives had changed dramatically, all thanks to leveraging LinkedIn correctly.

A Second Success Story: My Eldest Son Joins Him

On Monday, March 3, 2025, my eldest son, Zayne, who is now 25, also relocated to The Netherlands. Just like his younger brother, he too was able to secure a job that paid him what he was truly worth.

Paying It Forward: Helping Others Find Opportunities

Now that Dominic has experienced the life-changing impact of LinkedIn, he is using the platform to help other South Africans find work in The Netherlands. I am currently guiding him on applying a LinkedIn strategy that allows him to connect with and assist professionals seeking international job opportunities.
