I use the "F" word in my safety program Daily it really help workers understand the FOCUS!
Terry Penney
Senior OH&S and Env. & Reg., Professional, Presenter, Motivational Safety Speaker and Safety Program Development.
I use the F word in my Whole Health and Safety program, and before you Fly off the hand, or make False notes, safety is about Fact finding. Family protection First topics. So how many times do you use the F word in your program, over Five hundred I bet! And YES some of the works are a four letter F words!
Popular perceptions of health and safety (H&S) abound with myths and absurdities. Media coverage often focuses on extreme or sensationalised misinterpretations of H&S law, fuelling widespread confusion around what constitutes a safe environment. In the workplace, this damages employee confidence in safety management, making it harder for employers to get staff engagement and buy-in.
Organizational factors have the greatest influence on individual and group behaviour and a positive H&S culture will therefore bring significant benefits. This culture needs to promote employee involvement and commitment at all levels.
Management commitment is vital if both management and workforce are to talk productively about safety and achieve workforce engagement. It's useful for management to approach this from a motivational perspective, understanding the needs and wants of individuals, and what drives them. This approach potentially increases the profile of H&S in a positive way. More visible safety leadership is also very helpful – management need to look like they care and to demonstrate it by being right there in the workplace. This enables them to lead by example and to encourage the workforce to learn to act promptly on unsafe acts.
- Focus– The organization will always support a leader that articulates a clear strategy, which is consistent, despite business and market fluctuations
- Forget Failure– World class talent never need to have their failures highlighted. As a matter of fact, failure is good! ...but not as a teacher.
- Frantic Pace– Good leaders operate projects and strategies in minutes, hours and days and inform their team that this is the norm. And while some effort is required to vet a plan, it is never acceptable to wallow at a pace slower than the pace of business.
- Flexibility– A good leader leads by a combination of direction andcollaboration with staff. The leader makes the staff comfortable that the leader's voice need not be the loudest, the best and never perceived as inflexible. Flexibility insures the best idea is implemented.
- Finish Line- The leader must identify the prize in advance and a high standard must be established to reach and surpass the finish line…and when this race concludes successfully, the team must be encouraged to celebrate the success. The end result, a leader with the courage to embrace the FIVE (5) "F" Words will have a high performing team. Other F words Positive Words starting with letter F
