I try not to boast my stature
Dr. Sherman Miller
Retired Adjunct Professor Mathmetics at Delaware State University
After an industrial career, I turned my attention to the desire to teach to share the wealth of knowledge I had been afforded. However, my BS Degree in mathematics and MS Degree in physics left me unqualified to teach in public schools because I did not have teacher training courses. I became a substitute teacher. Hence, I turned my full attention to teaching at the college level.
I taught mathematics through calculus and statistics at the college level. If I was going to become a peer at the college level, I needed to obtain a doctoral degree. Since my Master’s Degree was from the University of Delaware, so I went to the College of Education to get their guidance. The head of the college suggested that I seek an Education Doctorate.
I found the Education Doctorate an enjoyable program where I had insightful courses loaded with practical information. I found Dr. Fred Hofstetter’s continuing to write books very enchanting. I vowed to attempt to emulate Dr. Hofstetter. Rowan and Littlefield publishers published a book I wrote on teaching algebra while I was still a graduate student.
- I am a person that does not feel a need to show off my stature in public meaning that I will often leave regalia in drawers or closets. When I was president of the undergraduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Delaware State University I very seldom wore my Omega poncho - I believe people ought to respect you on your merits, so you do not need to hide behind the persona of the fraternity.
- I am a fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. My wife Gwynelle and I took our honeymoon in the late 1960s. We passed through middle Florida where we saw a Knights of Columbus Council. I knocked on the door. I gave the right greeting then the Caucasian brothers welcomed us. It was a feast. Gwynelle and I had to finally sneak out.
- I use to do an opinion commentary on a Sunday morning community television show.
- I have been in the presence of many powerful people – politicians (president, secretaries, representatives, and senators), religious leaders, corporate leaders, wealthy individuals, and so on without personally taking pictures with these people.
Today, I ran across my doctoral graduation pictures. Therefore, I decided to change my tradition just a little bit to post a picture of me in my doctoral regalia. I closed my eyes. :-(
