I tried OpenAI to see if it's going to replace me

TLDR; Well, folks, it's been a wild ride working with OpenAI, but I think it's time to face the facts: I'm being replaced. Yup, that's right - this giant, all-knowing language model is taking my job. And you know what? I'm okay with it. I mean, let's be real - who needs a human writer when you've got a machine that can churn out perfect prose in a fraction of the time? Plus, I hear AI writers don't need things like sleep or a salary, so it's a win-win for everyone. So, farewell, dear reader, and please, don't mind the robot taking over. It's all for the greater good.

So yes, I didn't actually write the above. OpenAI did. With all the fuss about ChatGPT (AI Chatbot/Writer) and DALL-E (AI Art Generator), I decided to figure out how to get OpenAI to work and how it can realistically help me in my actual work.

To generate the above paragraph, I went to chat.openai.com/chat (which is free, I would like to note), logged in with Google credentials, and started to chat with the AI and eventually asked it to "write a TLDR on my experience with OpenAI and how it's going to replace me (in an informal and satirical tone)".

Still not quite convinced about the TLDR the AI wrote for me, I've decided to test the limits of what AI can do. I wanted to see how OpenAI would fair against a professional content writer - on a niche topic - on how blockchain and stablecoins can be used in cross-border payment and remittances.

The result is mind-blowing - what took probably hours of research and editing is accomplished in minutes with OpenAI.

I started off the content brief with simply a one-liner brief on - "write a comprehensive blog post on how blockchains and stablecoins can be used in cross-border payment and remittances". Like magic, the AI was able to generate a full-length blog post, hitting on almost all the key pointers I expected the piece to highlight on how blockchain and stablecoin technology can lower costs and make transactions faster and more secure. It even went on to provide definitions of the blockchain and stablecoins.

I've decided to push it further, to see if it would be able to include context on my geographic location and my product, a Singapore dollar-backed stablecoin, adjusting the one-liner brief to - "write a comprehensive blog post on how blockchains and stablecoins can be used in cross-border payment and remittances, linking it to Southeast Asia's thriving blockchain industry and a Singapore dollar-backed stablecoin".

To my amazement, the AI was able to understand the context and rewrote the piece, mentioning Southeast Asia and how the Singapore dollar is a widely-used currency. However, it was still lacking in terms of providing facts and numbers to support the narrative.

Hence, I prompted it to "Can we include some statistics on the volume of cross-border payments and remittances?" And the AI did not disappoint. It was able to produce up-to-date information and relevant statistics.

To top the article off and the icing on the cake, I asked it to suggest a quote on stablecoins to start the article off and it even gave three options!

It was even able to write a call to action for readers to get in touch to learn more.

Finally, I was able to prompt the AI to rewrite the whole article to account for all the changes.

At this point, the article is almost close to completion and I'm astonished at the experience. However, there are still limitations to what AI can do. In order to get to this point, I had to effectively train/prompt the AI to talk about specific pointers that are relevant to my audience and my product by providing information about who they are and what my product is. Perhaps writers in the future may transition to AI/ML specialists to improve the AI's ability to produce accurate and up-to-date information and understand even more specific information.

Some other fun things I prompted the AI to do was to draft a legal contract on intellectual property, write a cover letter for me to get a job a Google, and even write things like holiday greetings, convocation speeches to extremely random stuff like writing an article on Taylor Swift. I tried, and I'm also able to confirm that the AI is only up-to-date to 2020 on Taylor Swift as it only notes "evermore" as the latest album.

Now that I've seen how OpenAI handles writing, I wanted to see if the jobs of creatives are in danger too.

DALL-E is a large language model trained by OpenAI. It is capable of generating images from text descriptions, using a technique called neural style transfer. For example, if you provide DALL-E with the text "a dog with a hat," it will generate an image of a dog wearing a hat. (oh yes, I asked OpenAI to write this.)

To get started, I went to labs.openai.com, (again free, and logged in via Google) and gave a design brief for the cover image for this very article - I asked DALL-E to generate an art piece for "an all-knowing powerful being in a control room" and this was what I got!

However, this felt slightly off from the cover images I've had for all my blog posts, which featured Lego figurines prominently. Hence, I altered my description to "an all-knowing Lego figurine in a control room in cyberpunk style" and the results are close to the vision I have in my head, if not better.

In conclusion, I think AI would replace some tasks we do today, but not everything. The improvements in AI are staggeringly scary, which makes me an even stronger advocate for upskilling and the need to constantly improve. At the same time, I'm thrilled to discover new tools and technologies and I definitely will be using OpenAI to make my work even more efficient and productive.
