Intro to AI in Digital Marketing - By: Me (a human)?
Nowadays, there is so much buzz around the word “AI” that when anyone even briefly mentions it, you get an incredibly wide variety of reactions. AI for some means the end of all human creativity and death to all artists and creatives. AI to others means a quick and easy cheat your way through classes or to pump out endless cycles of content. In the digital marketing world, AI is a tool with lots of appeal, as its capabilities are seemingly endless. For some marketers (and other creatives alike) AI feels like the end to their jobs, an end to all careers, where AI replaces so much of us in the workforce. At the end of the day, when you hear “AI” or “artificial intelligence” it immediately gives you a vivid idea: that AI is the future of technology and progression (whether we like it or not).?In this blog, I want to provide some insight and critique to AI and explain the potential this digital tool has for us in the future.?
The Why Behind a Blog Like This?
For this blog, I was tasked with using ChatGPT to create content related to AI in digital marketing, to then critique and give my personal take about AI. This was a first for me, as before, I have never copied and pasted content from ChatGPT to use in my work. Now, I have used AI like ChatGPT and Perplexity in the past. For other classes, we were instructed on how to use AI. This was to understand its capabilities and to help brainstorm ideas, or in some cases, use it as a search engine to quickly find data and information.?
As a creative myself, AI is such a tricky concept to discuss, whether anyone wants to spend time arguing its unethical implications or argue for its implementation in our day-to-day lives, is up to everyone. Personally, I find AI to be a very controversial concept, but I can see where both sides come from. I truly believe AI to be a tool. Just like any other tool, whether you’re brandishing a paint brush in the art studio or cooking knife in the kitchen, any tool can create amazing things or damage and hurt others. ?
Diving Straight into AI?
For those living under a rock, wondering what AI is, this is for you. AI, specifically generative AI, is a type of artificial intelligence that uses algorithms to create an output that imitates human-generated content. This content ranges from written text, visual graphics or art, music and even computer code. These AI models study patterns or structures from the data given. So essentially, the AI scans for content related to your input to create an output for you.?
If you ask for a painting of a cat in a mid-century art style, it will look for patterns and take bits and pieces of existing artwork to generate a picture close to what you asked it to create. This process is what happens for other mediums and types of content. Personally, I′ve seen online the way people use ChatGPT to create cookie recipes or even patterns to create a crochet stuffed animal. The potential uses for generative AI can seem endless, one might wonder, “Well, how do regular people even play a role in creating anything anymore?” And this perspective is echoed throughout all fields and industries. But I’d like to make the argument that people are needed even more than ever, and that AI can coexist with human creativity.?
First Critique – The Intro?
For the first thing I generated using ChatGPT, I gave it instructions to create an introduction for a blog about AI in digital marketing. To my surprise, what came back was this incredibly long, wordy, and self-focused (ironically) paragraph about AI and the amazing ways it can be used in digital marketing. In the content itself, the focus seemed to be on how wonderful AI is and focused on creating this narrative of a “journey” that the reader would be partaking in. While the intro did introduce what the topic would be about, it seemed to create this “bigger than life” idea and the “wonderous adventure” this blog would be for the reader. ?
My main critique for this intro is that there is no other kind of personality behind it. What I mean is that unlike people, with their own unique perspective or personality. The tone or the voice behind any text changes so much among different individuals. I think that with anyone who has ever used AI can tend to see a pattern in how generative AIs tend to have this robotic voice. The tone hardly changes from the Siri-like upbeat robotic tone that you get from AI.?
AI in Digital Marketing?
“Show me how effective generative AI can be used in digital marketing.” This is what I had asked ChatGPT to do for my blog. This prompt I chose was to create a blog that focused on AI use in digital marketing. This will serve as an example to critique and build upon the multiple uses of AI.?I won’t copy and paste the entire thing since its way too much information overload, but I’ll include any interesting things that ChatGPT creates.?

Main Critiques?
After messing around on ChatGPT, I have noticed that there are lots of issues that can come from using only AI-generated content. A big problem is the lack of transparency in where this information comes from. For example, when you ask for information on a topic, ChatGPT does not include sources. This can be a huge issue when it comes to the credibility of the information you are given. Especially if the information is skewed or outdated. ?
In terms of creating the content, ChatGPT lacks a voice that feels unique. It has no special perspective or insight on the topics you would typically see from an individual. If you are a brand or business looking to create content that reflects your tone and voice, AI cannot imitate that very well. Even if you input examples of content, you have previously created, it does not create new content that sounds or looks like your old content. ChatGPT would only copy direct words or phrases that I had used in the old content to generate new content. Copying authenticity is something AI cannot capture.?
Another thing that ChatGPT does is it spits out lots of text and content. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what you are looking for. But in terms of content creation, this is not a good thing. ChatGPT is so detailed in the output it creates, but this can bog down people from reading all this information.?
In general, there are plenty of issues regarding generative AI. My main takeaway from using ChatGPT is that there should be no fear that generative?AI will overtake jobs or replace human creativity.?
General Takeaways?
There are plenty of blockers that prevent AI from truly reaching the creative capabilities that humans naturally have. In its essence, all generated content is an amalgam of real life previously created content. All AI does is take pieces and study patterns to put together something very similar to the original content.?
In other applications, generative AI can help people and work well to quickly process information. An AI like Perplexity for example, can help you research and find articles or information in a quick manner. Perplexity provides articles and the sources from which it summarizes and gathers information. A great use for AI is to summarize and break down content. If you need to read a large article that is difficult to understand, inputting the article into an AI platform and asking to summarize key points can greatly help people to understand. ?
For ecommerce, AI can be implemented as chat bots to help customers online shop or provide customer service to people struggling with something. AI can also be a great way to generate structures. An outline to create a story or blog, help you brainstorm ideas and get the ball rolling in terms of content creation. AI can be used to enhance user personalization. All of these things are amazing and incredibly helpful for people and brands alike.
The Future of AI?
Overall, I don't believe that AI will take over everything, some aspects of AI aren't capable of completely taking over content creation. I think that in terms of the ethics and regulations on AI, there will be a need to teach and orient people in the ways to ethically use AI. I don't believe it will be the end all to creation or take over people's jobs, but I believe that people that want to succeed will have to learn how to effectively use AI. Humans are the only ones fully capable of breathing life into projects, whether its art, text, or any other form of content. People will always be needed to provide insight and unique perspectives, and I believe that AI can help assist in that process whatever that may be.
