I Stay Home For Amy. Who Do You Stay Home For?

In the summer of 2001, my dear friend Amy Garriga woke up with a terrible migraine. Later that week, she was diagnosed with optic neuritis. Optic neuritis occurs when inflammation (swelling) damages the optic nerve — a bundle of nerve fibers that transmits visual information from your eye to your brain. This is a common symptom of Multiple Sclerosis, but tests for MS came back negative. With optic neuritis, patients usually respond to steroid treatment and their vision is restored partially, if not fully. Her vision continued to get worse. Nothing helped and she permanently lost her vision in her right eye.

For years, Amy was in and out of hospitals. She lost the ability to walk on her own, experienced horrible pain, spinal headaches, fatigue, and much more. Doctors could not get her mystery disease under control. Later, she was diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica or NMO. She now takes a drug that suppresses her immune system and thankfully, she is living a healthy, happy life.

For most people, COVD-19 is non-life threatening. They might feel sick or in many cases not even know they are carrying it. For Amy, this disease would be fatal. Her immune system is suppressed so she would not have the ability to fight the virus. Amy, her two daughters, her husband and her friends, all of whom love her very much – are scared. We pray that everyone stays home.

This goes beyond just you. Many people out there like Amy are counting on you to keep them safe. Who are you staying home for?

I stay home for my immunocompromised husband and 6 year old daughter. Nothing is more important then the safety of my family.

I stay home because my husband is a Pediatric ICU doc who is on the frontlines. Whatever he is exposed to, we are exposed to, and so we are REALLY careful to stay away from everyone! (By the way, Amy is great! I have known, and liked, her for years!)
