I Started Making 10x More Money Online Once I Stopped Believing These Business Lies.

I Started Making 10x More Money Online Once I Stopped Believing These Business Lies.

Lie #4: I need to find a killer idea.

I used to think that a one-person business was complex.

I felt trapped in the sea of business gurus, false information, and get-rich-quick schemes. I procrastinated for years. Stuck in tutorial hell. Mentally masturbating of creating a business ‘someday.’

Only when I hated my 9–5 enough I decided to take the plunge.

Here are all the lies I was told and what you can do instead.

Lie #1: I need to wait to monetize.

I waited two years to monetize.

I felt I had to ask permission from the monetization gods. Wrong. Monetize from day one of your journey. Create an offer to sell to your audience, even if it is only for $10 or less.

No one is coming to save you.

If you keep waiting for a handout or hand-up, you’ll be waiting forever. You don’t need anyone’s permission or authority to start making money.

If you’re saying: “I need to x number of followers before charging.”

Stop.

There will never be a time when you feel ready or capable.

So you might as well get it over and start selling something.

Start with a Minimal Viable Offer:

  1. Audit all your skills, knowledge, and work experience.
  2. Resell them via a 1:1 x 1-hour coaching offer.
  3. Plug that offer everywhere.

Start at $50 an hour and go up from there.

Yes, it’s unscalable. That’s the point.

You’re optimizing for learning, not earning.

Will your offer suck? Probably. But that’s okay.

You’re now getting paid to do customer research and add value. You’ll see common problems and start to develop a solution for them.

You can start to refine your offer as you go.

Monetize from day 1.

Lie #2: I need to go viral

I love going viral.

It’s a massive dopamine hit. Likes are going up, heaps of comments and engagement. It’s so addicting. It's no different to playing the slot machine.

But virality doesn’t pay the bills.

Going viral could be bad for business.

You fill up your funnel with poor-quality leads and the wrong-fit customers. You might have a lot of eyeballs but no conversions. You attract lurkers who are only here for a good time, not a long time.

I’ve started to optimize for conversions.

My engagement sucks.

But I’m attracting:

  • Higher quality leads.
  • Long-term clients.

I’ve made more money than ever before.

Don’t get me wrong. Trading virality for conversion is hard.

The initial drop in engagement was a massive blow to my ego and confidence. I felt like an addict getting off a drug. But it was necessary for me to get to the next stage of my growth.

Viral content does not equal money.

Lie #3: I need to be an expert

If you’ve solved a problem in your life, you’re an expert.

You can sell that solution to someone else who is 2–3 steps behind you. People don’t want to buy from someone ten steps ahead.

Why? They feel like they can’t relate to that person.

People want to know that you know what they are going through.

I help solopreneurs add 2–3k per month to their one-person business. The customer avatar is who I was 3–4 years ago. I’m relatable because I’m only 3–4 steps ahead of where they are.

I can shortcut their learning and time.

Remember:

If you solve a problem in private, it’s called self-improvement.

If you solve a problem in public, it’s called business.

Expertise is not qualifications or a piece of paper.

It’s solving real problems for real people.

You are the case study of your own work.

Solve your own problems first, and then help others do the same.

Lie #4: I need to find a killer idea.

I paid a company $210 to help extend my Bali visa for another 30 days.

At the office, the company rep told me they do 10+ renewals per day.

That’s $2,100 per day at a minimum.

Did I get ripped off? Probably.

But that’s not the point.

Everyone thinks that entrepreneurship relies on a killer idea.

But sometimes, it’s just helping clueless tourist (like me) renew their visas.

All you need is:

  • One painful problem (visa renewal).
  • For one customer avatar (tourists visiting Bali).
  • Acquired through one distribution channel (referrals).

Your idea may be truly innovative.

But maybe your idea is a boring visa renewal agency.

Whatever it is:

Don’t let innovation be the enemy of profitability.

You don’t need to:

  • Wait to monetize.
  • Go viral
  • Be an expert.
  • Have a killer idea.

Don’t believe anyone who tells you this.

Start monetizing your knowledge with the traffic you already have.

?? I’ve previously sold a one-person business and I’m in the process of scaling another one to $20k per month. If you want my one-person business growth system, I’ve created a FREE email course for you to get started.

Refreshing.. and motivating insights!

This: "Mentally masturbating on creating a business ‘someday.’" Most remain stuck in doing this their entire lives. When all they need to do is take the first step.
