Igniting a Spirit of Service: Lessons from SEEK 2025

What happens when thousands of young people gather to explore their purpose and discover ways to make a difference? At SEEK 2025, the Salesian Volunteer Programs tapped into this energy, inspiring students to serve their communities and create meaningful change.

This year’s conference, organized by FOCUS Catholic (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), was held from January 1st to January 5th in two locations: Salt Lake City, Utah, and Washington, D.C. Over 21,000 students attended, eager to grow, connect, and find ways to make a positive impact. The Salesian Family—Salesian Lay Missioners, Salesian Volunteers, Salesian Sisters, and Priests—joined this vibrant event, sharing stories of service and growth while connecting with future leaders eager to bring hope to others.

A Universal Mission of Service

The conference was centered on service and helping others, themes that resonate beyond any specific faith. Attendees participated in activities designed to inspire action, such as talks, moments of reflection, and opportunities to connect with organizations making a difference. At the Salesian booths, participants learned about global initiatives to uplift the young and marginalized, exploring ways to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Planting Seeds for the Future

One of the biggest successes of the conference was creating a list of over 250 young people interested in joining the Salesian mission. These individuals now have a pathway to explore service opportunities and grow into roles that foster compassion and resilience. SEEK 2025 offered a space where aspirations turned into action, and personal growth found fertile ground.

What I Learned at SEEK 2025

This conference was more than just an opportunity to share our mission—it was a space for learning and connection. Here’s what stood out to me:

  1. Young People Want to Make a Difference I was inspired by how many attendees expressed a genuine desire to create positive change. Their passion for sharing love and kindness reminded me that this generation holds immense potential to transform the world.
  2. Structures That Support Growth Are Essential Organizations like the Salesians and others at SEEK provide tools and pathways for young people to develop personally and professionally. These structures give them a foundation to grow while making meaningful contributions to society.
  3. The Power of Listening Many young adults simply want to be heard without judgment. They value spaces where they can share their dreams and struggles openly. This reaffirmed for me the importance of creating an environment where dialogue is met with empathy and respect.
  4. Connecting Through Simple Activities One of my most impactful experiences was playing Connect Four with students. Over three days, many returned to play, and only after forming a connection did they ask about my work and mission. These interactions were a reminder that trust and understanding often grow through simple, shared moments.
  5. Mental Health Is a Priority I was moved by how seriously many young people are taking their mental health. Some have even chosen to step away from social media to protect their well-being. Their courage to prioritize self-care inspires hope for a healthier, more mindful future.

These experiences reminded me that when we listen and engage with young people, we create opportunities for mutual growth and understanding. Together, we can walk a path of shared learning and meaningful action.

The Salesian Family in Action

The presence of the Salesian Sisters and Priests brought added depth to the conference. Their stories and insights demonstrated how a life of service and community can be fulfilling and transformative. The joy and energy they shared left a lasting impression on those they encountered.

Continuing the Mission

SEEK 2025 was more than an event—it was a meeting place of ideas and hearts united by a desire to make a difference. The lessons learned and connections made here will ripple outward, creating a broader impact over time.

Reflection Questions

As we reflect on these experiences, here are some questions to consider:

  • How can we create spaces where young people feel empowered to share their stories and aspirations?
  • In what ways can organizations like ours support the mental health and well-being of future leaders?
  • What small, meaningful actions can each of us take to inspire others to serve?

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Let’s keep the conversation going and explore how we can work together to make a difference.
