I Sincerely Need Your Help

How did that headline grab you? You really want to know what I need, don’t you?

Social scientists at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California staged a car accident and measured the reaction of those passing by. Here’s what they found.

Less than 10% of all people will stop without a specific request to do so.

Over 50% of all people will stop if a professionally printed sign says “Help Needed” is placed near the scene.

Over 80% of all people will stop with a HAND LETTERED sign with the same message.

And – GUESS WHAT – over 95% of all people will stop if there is a person standing by the incident pleading at them to stop and help.

The thing is we Americans want to be helpful. If you ask for help, and it is obvious you are in need, the vast majority will be there for you.

You can use this professionally. Try saying it to a claimant, attorney, opposing carrier:

“I sincerely need your help”.

I sincerely need your help. The claim just isn’t worth what your client wants. Could you please explain that to him?”

I sincerely need your help. Based on the laws of this state, and the rules of my company, I am required to use aftermarket parts on this car. Could you please explain that to your insured?”

I sincerely need your help. Could you please read the driver’s manual quote I sent you? As it says you must pay attention at all times, and you tell me you never saw the other vehicle.  How could you be paying attention at all times and never see the other vehicle?”

Look for places where you could use someone’s help. Sincerely ask for it.

More times than not, you’ll get it.
