History

While some might think it was dreamt up by a sugar-coated fairy or maybe Homer Simpson, its origin is quite altruistic. Back in 1938, the Salvation Army in Chicago designated National Donut Day the first Friday in June to honor their members who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Because, of course, nothing says "Thank you for your service" quite like a jelly-filled pastry. Flash forward to today, and National Donut Day has morphed into a nationwide doughnut palooza. People across America are waking up with the mission, nay, the sacred duty, to scarf down at least one donut, justifying the extra calories in the name of 'tradition' and 'national spirit.’ What a world we live in, huh? But, hey, any excuse for a donut is a good one in my book. So, mark your calendars, donut lovers, because that sacred day of circular sweetness is rolling around again!
