You might say, who is this person making such political statements. No I am not a member of Project Fear, so I am not about to frighten you either. However, I will make some statements and pose some questions and we can have a robust debate about why this is so important.
Let me also say that I am no expert in these matters but I have some experience and I am entitled to an opinion just as you are. I also do not give much credence to a view that suggests that all those that want Brexit, (that is Britains exit from the EU "project") are xenophobes or little Englanders. Their fears are as real as mine or anyone else's, they will use their fears and concerns to make their arguments and I will use mine.
My arguments for staying in EU for trade and greater political union.
1. Single European trading market both for inward investment and trade, common regulations. efficiency for investors and traders
2. Negotiating power with North America, India, China, Africa, Russia etc
3. Leading on Human rights and raising global standards not defaulting to lowest common denominator
4. Protection of labour and minimum welfare rights
5. Increased security coordination
6. Joint response to demographic time-bomb of declining working age population and growing retired population. Germany's working age population will decline from 45 million to 39 million in 15 years. Europes will decline by 30 million.

7. Need a grown up conversation about immigration painful though it is to manage the reality of need and change.
So there is my entirely non scientific presentation of why I want to stay as part of the EU. Get involved in the debate, get beyond the propaganda.
So tell me what you will do about these issues or areas of concern?
Finally I make no distinction between an economic free trade area and a closer political union. Both go hand in hand for me.

8 年Jon I think your hopes may unfortunately be dashed. It is the emotional argument that will win and immigration will I think play the largest part. The in campaign has gone with project fear and fear is an emotion we dont like so the out campaign has reminded us that it is just scaremongering and has engineered the fear much better "yes we would love to have all the immigrants but we have no spare housing, schools etc" Neither side is giving real facts so the electorate is uneducated and so all they have to vote on are emotions

8 年I agree, the arguments for and against are going to be complex and lets hope the voter is not so overwhelmed that they respond to the crass sound bites such as issues around migrants etc. So don't apologise for raising the debate it is such a life changing choice it needs proper discussion. I have a simple view, which starts from a point of my common sense. Historically how can folk contemplate that in some way choosing to distance themselves from Europe is a sensible way forward. In a global world there is no form of isolationism that will work or indeed has ever worked. In terms of a 'global village' Europe is the immediate neighbour and I am not sure that we can distance ourselves from that whilst looking at others more distant to be as concerned about our well being. But when it comes down to it whatever the choice, a healthy economy in this busy world seems to me to be best managed incrementally and carefully rather than radical change. I am sure that sounds like a cope out to those advocating an exit, but I am not sure I want to take the gamble they offer. But happy to see sensible arguments set out.
