I sang "Alai Alai" in Martil
The week has been intense, filled with engaging work that I truly find fulfilling. In addition to crafting training programs for adults and delving into innovative tools associated with online learning, I have also committed myself to elevate the levels of interactivity (...) Despite my busy professional schedule, I chose to take a break to fulfill a profound aspiration that has been growing since my arrival in Tangier : visiting Martil and meditating to Sadhguru's song "Alai Alai."
Martil: Beyond a Touristic Destination
It's natural that I chose to visit Martil while in Tangier. However, dear reader, I'm not aware of where you're located—perhaps far from Morocco! So, let's delve into some information about this Moroccan city.
Martil is administratively part of Tetouan City , an ancient city in Morocco that I plan to explore and share insights about soon. The name "Martil" is tied to the Spanish period in Morocco, given by Spain. Despite its Spanish roots, the city has an older story, nestled by the sea and renowned for its tower and, naturally, its port .
It is true that the city of Martil is known among Moroccans as a tourist destination, with a beach that pleases everyone in the summer some higher education institutions, and a university that attracts students throughout the rest of the year.
However, for me, I decided to explore the city in a more spiritual or mindful way, and thus, I chose a different approach. I thought, why not go to Martil and meditate on the song of Sadhguru, the spiritual master from India who is renowned worldwide?
You might ask: what is the connection between an Indian spiritual master and the city of Martil in the northern part of Morocco? (...) It's a very good question, and the answer lies in the sea and the waves.
Alai Alai
The song "Alai Alai" also known as "Waves of Bliss" is a song that I truly appreciated the first time I heard it.
It's undeniable that Sadhguru made a wise decision when he shared this song, rooted in his Indian tradition, with the world.
I'm not taking a subjective approach; let's go step by step. We begin by exploring its lyrics, then conduct an analysis, and finally, we'll understand why it is unique to go to Martil and sing this song right in front of the sea.
"Alai Alai" Lyrics
Like a wave
The mind runs on
In search of happiness
Without understanding the nature of life
Your desire is just a small fish
But it grows into a whale
And even after catching the whale
You still want another small fish!
The wind blows
The boat rocks
On top of the waves of desire

The heart beats
Life happens.
Because of the waves of desire
The waves are only on the surface of the sea
Deep inside, the fish are free
The desires are only on the surface of the mind
Deep inside there is just the dance of ecstasy
When you realize this, you will be blissful
And all the waves will be Waves of Bliss

Reading and Analyzing the Lyrics of the Song "Alai Alai"
Let's take a closer look at these lyrics and break them down. Firstly, they deeply explore the nature of desire and the pursuit of happiness. The waves serve as a metaphor for the restlessness of the mind, always seeking satisfaction without truly understanding life.
Next, comparing desire to a small fish growing into a whale emphasizes how desires tend to intensify and are never fully satisfied, creating an endless cycle. The mention of the wind blowing and the boat rocking on desire's waves vividly describes the turbulence caused by unfulfilled wishes. The heartbeat amid these waves symbolizes the continuous flow of life shaped by desire's fluctuations.
Lastly, the contrast between surface waves and the freedom of fish deep in the sea suggests that beyond fleeting desires, there exists inner freedom. Similarly, the difference between surface-level desires of the mind and the deep dance of ecstasy within signifies a profound realization yet to be discovered.
I feel that this song aligns well with the choice I made. I remember moments spent by the sea in Martil, listening to the music and watching the waves and the water's nature...I sensed that what I observed in front of me was, indeed, within myself.
The desire to be happy is deeply rooted in my human nature, and when I close my eyes and imagine the meanings of the song "Alai Alai," I find myself dancing with the sea of Martil.
The last words
I'm not entirely certain if this was Sadhguru's intended message when he initially sang the song "Alai Alai." Does it suggest that we should select a destination, travel there, play the song, and dance?
Regardless, if you happen to be in Morocco, I encourage you to try the same exercise I did! Plan a day, head to Martil, find a peaceful spot by the sea, play the song, and embrace moments of joy! It's not an advertisement but truly a lesson in joy that I recommend, especially in Martil, a city that seeks nothing but peace.
