If I ruled the world

Thought for the Week: I love my old films, well all films actually. The other night I watched Apocalypse Now, an absolute classic. One of the key moments is when the renegade general is being praised for his wisdom and the guy doing the praising says "you know, he said 'if is the middle word of life". Well there has been a fair bit of "if" going on recently all over the place.
I visited my son at the weekend, he runs three fuel distribution sites. He gets in at 07:00, is lucky to get home for 7pm and then stands to get a call around 03:00 - 04:00 when the drivers turn in and find anything they don't understand. He has had to handle a vehicle that rolled over, a river contamination and several other things, all without any formal training from his company.
On top of all that he has smashed the depot sales targets, trained new employees and done a lot of local networking.
I think I feel pretty humbled by all that. He doesn't have to do it, he just carries his responsibility well. He could say if only I had more staff, if only I had less responsibility. Do you know what he said when I asked him about that the other day?
'If' is the biggest barrier to brilliance and achieving stuff that you can feel proud of.
It makes a lot of sense to me when I think about it.
If we had more money, if we had more resources, if I were making the decisions, if you knew what I know.
If can give you a lot of reasons for not doing something.
If can get in the middle of doing what you should be doing.
If is the equivalent of "I'm going to give up smoking tomorrow".
If is the biggest excuse you will ever come up with.
If will stop you getting on and just doing it.
