I Ripped Apart a University's Cringy Ad... and Show You Psychological Triggers that Will Increase Your Readership!

Hey there champ

Happy Monday, eh?

So what I want to do here today is first, share the post I did a couple month's ago of me "critiquing" the ad that I saw (because there's a few golden chicken nuggets in there that will make your writing better)

Then I'll show you the better ad I saw a couple days ago and give you a desert helping of a couple more golden chicken nuggets

Sound good?

Alright, the first ad and post:

You'll never accidentally devalue your brand again after this..

When I see this ad, "WGU is so affordable that.." I think, "Low quality!"

And, "Who would feel proud of going to "the most affordable" school?"…

Affordability can be a great selling proposition, but only when you couple that with quality as well..

Like this:

"Our students are able to pay out of pocket, AND they're achieving more than most who paid double for 'other' schools… Johnny (Class of '22), was a part of our engineering program and got a job at SpaceX last year"

See what I'm saying?

Or how about adding this somewhere:

"With most schools, you pay for THEIR "brand" not YOUR education.

At WGU, we care about performance, not prestige. You'll get a top-tier school education, without paying the grossly inflated top-tier school price"

…Now, cheap is cool.

Now, cheap is a form of "sticking it to the elites"

So sure, be one of the most affordable, as long as you're still one of the best

Ok?

Class dismissed, Western Governors University ;)

Class dismissed indeed..

You ever get those nightmares where you haven't done any homework all quarter? Then for some reason you're in school naked, yet no one really notices, so you're kinda in this awkward state of anxiety over trying to hide your junk but also not wanting to seem too obvious, even though you're obviously very naked?

Can't be the only one

Anyways,

Here's the "better" ad:

Ahh, much better

Why?

Because of that gosh darned massive benefit statement that's hitting us front and center!

Now these guys are hitting the right kind of psychological triggers that are gonna make someone click the ad

The first one being the aspect of time.

"Within six months of graduation,..."

Only six months seems like a fast result, especially when used in conjunction with the rest of the statement,

"...I doubled my annual salary."

Wham!

Doubling your salary is pretty sweet wouldn't you say?

And being able to do it just six months after graduating.. Well hot damn, sign me up now!

…Oh yea, there's one more important psychological trigger to note here:

Social proof.

This statement is a quote from an actual student who got this result..

Some bloke by the name of Matthew D!

The fact that the statement isn't a "made up" statistic that starts off with, "...On average, our students earn X amount after graduation..", and uses a real life result, makes it all the more powerful

...So there you have it

Whether you're writing an ad for a university, or a post for your upcoming workshop, understanding the right kinds of psychological triggers to use to get your audience buying is, well, pretty dang important, wouldn't you say?

What's also important, is the format you use to give information and sell to said audience

As you have seen, my medium of choice lately has been the LI Newsletter, and I'll tell you what,
