I Refuse To Write-Off 2020

It goes without saying 2020 was one of the worst years of our lives. Unprecedented/challenging/difficult times and trying to adapt to a new normal have overtaken success, celebration and triumph. For some people this truly was the worst year of their lives as they have lived with debilitating physical or mental illness, lost a close loved one, or have experienced relentless and long term financial impact. I am saddened by their situation and the loss of life this year due to Covid. This article is not for those people.
For those of us not so dramatically impacted by the events of 2020 what we really experienced was a temporary loss of convenience, flexibility, and freedom. So many aspects of our life as usual changed from how we worked, how or if we travelled, how kids attended school, getting together with family or friends, being entertained in person, or shopping without lines or masks on! YES, it was bad and frustrating and difficult BUT that does not mean 2020 was a write off.
As the year comes to a close how will you remember 2020? Does it go into the 'forgettable' column where you never want to think about it again? An entire 365 days just vanish from your memory? OR do you take a good look at what took place this year and find the great things that happened, the achievements despite challenge, the relationships strengthened and the hidden gems?
Will you join me in not writing off 2020 but taking an objective and optimistic view of what was a 'bad year'?
Here are just few things I am grateful for about 2020...
- Building a stronger family unit by spending more time with my wife and daughter
- Watching my daughter grow and excel in remote learning by being more involved in her school work and activities
- Launching my wife's business and building the foundation for the future
- Re-prioritizing home budgets and what's really important to us as a family
- Amazing work colleagues who together overcame major obstacles, learned to deliver highly complex software implementations in a remote way, and began or delivered process re-engineering efforts and reporting coupled with new technologies
- Strengthened work relationships due to everyone working remotely and using video conference as a way to both see & hear each other
- Having a job and still having a job!
What about you? Will you share something great that happened this year?
Happy New Year and may 2021 bring your great joy and success.
Thanks for reading!

4 年This is really a healthy exercise to recollect the good things?happened, ??Alan. Gratitude?always makes us?feel more positive?(who knows what’s ahead of us in 2021???).?I?am?also one of those who wished to write off 2020?early on?and gone through some anxious?times.?However,?I am?also thankful for the year?that?let?me restart my?hobby?of drawing?I used to once enjoy. Thankful for the extra time, I watched?every moment of?my?lil?one?growing from?crawling to?running;?babbling?to?speaking.?And for investing in my?learning and?development, managed to complete a couple of certification courses.
It’s a great lense to use Alan - I’ve been impacted myself but have looked for all the positives throughout like you. I did some contracting (new) lots of gardening and landscaping (focused) so much time with family (amazing) did some volunteering and social work (never had time before) and feel richer for all of it ?? 2020 was a new experience ??
