I Quit Perfectionism. I Don't Miss It.

I'm condensing this newsletter to better align with my minimalist nature. That, and your attention span. I know that when I see a long article, I don't read it; I skim.

I'm going to try a lighter format where I'll flip one conventional concept on its head each week. Then give you a few pointers for putting it to work in the real world.

If Something is Worth Doing, It is Worth Doing Poorly

You'll waste your precious life if you wait until something is perfect. You'll overthink, stress, and put undo pressure on yourself to succeed. (Sound familiar?)

By doing things poorly you free yourself to become a prolific creator. You limit your creative potential when you want everything polished and professional. In school you are rewarded for perfection. In real life, perfection is a ball & chain.

The first step of starting imperfectly is the hardest. As whitecoats, it goes against our nature to shoot from the hip. It feels wrong, and we worry about being judged. Get in the habit of swiftly taking the first scrappy step. Then you'll start to think and work like a prolific creator (even if you go at a slow & steady simmer). Over time, you'll grow momentum, skills, and attention that can't be duplicated by glittery, perfect action.

Action Steps:

Starting poorly can be anything. Here are some ideas:

  • Write online daily
  • Buy that microphone and start that podcast
  • Buy a cheap domain and throw a landing page on there using Cardd
  • Interview 10 people who are where you want to be. Find similarities and take the next step forward.
  • Make that first YouTube video
  • Post that first TikTok video
  • Read a book about professional development that interests you instead of hitting "Next" button on Netflix and rolling another episode
  • Take an online course that teaches you a valuable skill in the direction you want to go
  • Declutter the space in your life where you work so you aren't distracted by a mess
  • Dare to give real, undistracted thought to what you actually want to build
  • Reach out to friends and family and ask them to be guinea pigs for your coaching service

Thank you for this Jamie... From a young age it's drilled into us all that everything must be perfect and if not then it's no good enough Even as Pharmacists / Pharmacy students we are considered perfectionists (need to be of course) and very risk averse but this doesn't mean our personal lives have to reflect our professional attitudes The only way to grow is to throw yourself in at the deep end and start swimming!

Completely agree! Perfectionism is baked into all health professions but it's a crutch in the digital world.

I have "don't let perfection get in the way of good" on top of my to-do list, to remind me of this exactly. I spent so many years wanting to start a newsletter, but I was like I don't have a website...blah, blah, blah, blah. Guess what none of that mattered. Love this message!
