I Quit Every Day!

A friend of mine, JB (name changed for privacy), a finance professional, often says this when someone asks him about his rampant chain-smoking. I have known him for a long time, and I know that he really does try to quit, but quitting smoking is quite hard.?

JB is not alone—nearly 253.0 million people in India are heavy smokers. So, this month, we're tackling a topic that a lot of us have seen around us: the struggle to quit smoking.?

Why Is Quitting Nicotine So Hard?

You might wonder, "If someone can quit for a day, why can't they quit forever?" The truth is, it's not that simple. Here's why:

  1. ?? Brain Chemistry: Nicotine alters your brain's reward system, making you crave that "feel-good" sensation.
  2. ?? Physical Dependence: Your body becomes accustomed to nicotine, leading to withdrawal symptoms when you try to quit.
  3. ?? Habit Formation: Smoking often becomes deeply ingrained in daily routines.
  4. ?? Stress and Emotional Triggers: Many smokers use cigarettes as a coping mechanism.

This is why my friend JB, like many others, finds himself quitting "every day." It's a constant battle against both physical and psychological addiction.

Tips to Quit Smoking

If you're trying to quit, here are some steps you can take (you can also share it with someone who is trying to quit):

  1. ?? Set a Quit Date: Choose a specific day to stop smoking and prepare for it.
  2. ?? Identify Triggers: Recognize situations that make you want to smoke and plan alternatives.
  3. ?? Try Nicotine Replacement Therapy: Consider nicotine gum, patches, or lozenges to manage cravings.
  4. ??? Stay Active: Regular exercise can help reduce cravings and manage stress.
  5. ?? Seek Support: Join a support group or ask friends and family for encouragement.
  6. ?? Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like deep breathing can help manage stress without cigarettes.
  7. ?? Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge each day, hour, or even minute you go without smoking.
