I prefer a life of scars

I have a new scar.? A skin cancer removal from my back.

It’s not my first scar.? I have had my thyroid removed, a lump from my chest, and I ran into a tree while scootering in Santorini in 1993 which resulted in a lot on my legs!

A scar is the body's natural way of healing. So am I going to make a connection between my physical scars and it’s relationship to business?? Yes I am.??

Rather than thinking about my scars as marks to hide, they should be celebrated. They demonstrate courage, tenacity, and Sisu. These are the qualities that not only help us navigate the challenges in life but also fuel success in business. Every scar, whether physical or metaphorical, tells a story of resilience and learning.

In business, the scars we accumulate—failed products, missed opportunities, cultures gone wrong are proof of our growth. They shape us and make us better equipped for the next challenge. So how do we embrace these scars in business and turn them into strengths?

?Here are three ways to do just that:

?? Celebrate Failure as Learning

Every business failure is a lesson in disguise. Just as scars on the body show healing, mistakes in business mark the path to improvement. Instead of hiding failures, business builders should look back and celebrate how far they've come, extracting key lessons to fuel future success. Each setback brings you one step closer to what works.? I would love business builders to share more of their failures so others can learn.

???? Build Resilience Through Setbacks

Scars show you've survived. In business, resilience is built by enduring challenges. When a project falls through, a deal doesn't go as planned, or you have had to change direction with a business, it’s not the end—it's an opportunity to reinforce your approach and strategy. Build a mindset that treats each hurdle as a stepping stone, making your business stronger and more adaptable.

?? Embrace Vulnerability and Authenticity

People connect with stories of struggle, perseverance, and recovery just like scars tell a personal story. In business, showing authenticity, especially around your failures, creates deeper connections with your team, partners, and customers. Being open about your business scars makes you relatable and trustworthy, qualities that foster long-term success.

By treating both physical and business scars as badges of honour, you not only embrace your own journey but inspire others to see the value in theirs. The truth is, a scarred business is an interesting business—one that’s been tested, challenged, and strengthened over time.

So, let’s show and share our scars so others can learn.

Us pale types are never ending investigators of our spots! Glad you’ve got the scar only.

Thanks for introducing me to Sisu (I'd never heard of it before!) - and let's all keep collecting a few scars!
