I’m in a great job, but I’ve been thinking about leaving because my company is headquartered overseas and there’s not growth opportunity here. Additionally, the culture makes it hard for female employees. Having said that, there’s been a change of late and I’m earning more recognition. This has been surprising and exciting and has led me to delay searching for a new job. My question for you is: Should I stay or should I go?

Dear Senior Leader,

Congrats, it’s great that you are receiving more recognition and being treated well.

Some questions for you:

Do the recent changes give you more confidence that the underlying culture problems you mentioned could be on a path to getting fixed? Do you believe that you can be a core piece of making that happen? If so, it could be super exciting and inspiring to be part of that change. It could be an opportunity.

If that’s not the case, and if you believe that you must be in another country to advance and impact change, are you willing to be in that country? If you’re not going to relocate and moving is required for advancement, it might be time to move on. I would suggest restarting your halted job search. Look for a job with a corporate HQ where you live and a culture that’s more in line with what you want.

In the meantime, keep doing a great job where you are so that you can access more opportunity. You never know where that would lead but you always want to give yourself as many options as possible.

Question. You mentioned that there was no growth opportunity in the area that you were working. Have you thought of ways that there could be growth? Many times we put roadblocks in our way when there are opportunities to build a bridge. It seems like you are in a "growth period". I use this phase when someone wants to expand their knowledge. While you are working at this job, have you thought about taking the opportunity to learn more either with a class or training? Even though I'm 68 and just a retail sales associate, I've taken the opportunities my job has given to increase my knowledge of the business. Do I plan to climb ?? the corporate ladder? No That doesn't mean the knowledge gained can't be used to help others understand how the business is run. You have an opportunity to change the business that you work in from within. Take that as a challenge. See where it goes. You made it this far. Why limit yourself? Just a thought. Good luck.
