I NEVER get PMT! So why am I getting it in perimenopause?...

I made an interesting discovery recently.
Two weeks ago, my mood took a nose dive.
This is so unlike me.. :(
And it was the classical 'Sepia picture'. Sepia is a homeopathic remedy par excellence for hormonal issues, including PMT (pre-menstrual tension, also known as PMS; pre-menstrual stress). Under the 'Mind' section in the homeopathic Materia Medica, Sepia has the following in bold type, "Aversion to those loved best, to family. Aversion to sympathy and company". My poor boyfriend! It was a good job that it wasn't our weekend to be together: In true Sepia fashion I was most grumpy with him for absolutely no reason, and wanted to be completely left alone - even his text messages were annoying me! (He's such a sweetheart and I get regular loving texts from him throughout the day when we are not together). I wasn't rude, but I wasn't exactly reciprocating the affection, lol!
I didn't put two and two together until my period arrived 7 days later and my mood took a huge upswing.
I am 49 years old and am in perimenopause. If you don't already know my story, perimenopause symptoms struck me 2 years ago - night sweats and hot flushes, migraines, bladder irritability and insomnia - suddenly and out of nowhere. And the emotional shock of the hormonal change was deeply unsettling. I managed all of my symptoms using homeopathy, supplements, herbs, and some deep mindset work on my fears. In just 3 weeks all of my symptoms had resolved. Apart from the slowing down of my cycle, I've been pretty much symptom-free for the last 23 months.
My last 2 cycles have been around 70 days, I follow the moon cycle when I am not having a period to honour my body's natural rhythms. My partner and I decided to look back at our messages 1 week before my previous period this year, and sure enough the same! Short, abrupt messages from me and a general unwillingness to engage in any kind of communication.
I have been blessed with regular, pain-free, pretty much 'text-book' periods for most of my adult life. And I have never suffered with PMT. So why is this happening now?
It is commonly believed that PMT is caused by a reduction in the hormone progesterone (which happens naturally before menstruation) or too little progesterone. Hormones do play a part, but in my experience there is ALWAYS an underlying emotional cause to hormone imbalance.
When I tuned in with my body and connected with the anger, it wasn't an aversion to company or family, in fact I wanted my kids closer at that time. It was an aversion specifically to my partner. And when I dug deeper what I discovered was that I still had some unresolved hurts from my past marriage. I thought that I had cleaned out all of those old emotional wounds, but there they were, still festering! Here was an opportunity to access an even deeper level of healing that was required.
Perimenopause is the mother of all wake-up calls. Changing hormone levels do have a physical impact, however any uncomfortable symptoms during times of hormone shift will be magnified and prolonged if we are carrying a heavy load of emotional baggage. These symptoms are the body's wisdom pleading that unresolved life issues be addressed.

As women we store emotion in our sacral chakras, the energy centre situated in the pelvic region. Our periods are more than a release of blood - they are also an important emotional release readying us for a new cycle. That is why the body requires us to slow down, rest and recharge during menstruation, but most of us push on through and carry on life at 100 miles an hour. In perimenopause our emotional self which has tried for years to get our attention, makes one final hormonally mediated push to get us to deal with our accumulated emotional needs, for we are soon to lose that monthly outlet that our periods provide.
Difficult as that week was for me, I'm grateful to my body for showing me what still needed to be healed in me emotionally.
It will be interesting to see what happens in a few weeks’ time and if I find myself needing Sepia..??
