I need your help!

I am busy writing my next seminar which will focus on Performance Management.  In summary, however you look at it, how we currently appraise and measure people is broken; few look forward to the event; few gain from it and research show that those who come out as being the company’s best performers are (in 66% of cases) not actually the best.  As one guru has stated appraisals are an “expensive and complex way of making people feel unhappy.”

But measuring our people feels right, we are measured from an early age and so expect to have that continue when we move into business.  Our staff want feedback and want to improve; business has a vested interest in making this happen and yet all too often the current process singularly fails to deliver.  How can we square this circle?

In the seminar I intend to consider:

  • The historical context – quite how did we end up where we are?
  • Why the current system fails
  • What are we actually trying to achieve
  • A plan, with simple defined steps on what you can tangibly do to make it better

My challenge is that I am struggling with a title.  I had considered ‘The Measure of a Man,’ (with acknowledgement to Martin Luther King), but this does not feel quite right, so I wanted to tap into your mass creativity and see what you thought.  What do you think it should be called?

I would appreciate your input.

 Many thanks,

Maybe I'm a bit late to add a suggestion, but I just wanted to say that I think the cartoon at the top is brilliant and so apt for the subject

Are you still looking to do this seminar? Title (although long winded!!) could be how 'how do we get performance management to perform' :)

I think we have seen the pendulum swing in both directions "all numbers" vs. "focus on People" I am hoping that the sentiment is a mix of both is what makes a company a great performer.

This is classic informal appraisal from many managers in the NHS. I have seen it.
