Are you look to launch or to grow your law blog? One of the most common stumbling blocks for busy firm owners is figuring out what to write on your law blog. Keeping momentum and consistency can be challenging, but it’s an extremely important component of getting traction with your law firm blog.
As a freelance legal writer for the past seven years, people often ask me, “What on earth do you write about?”
I’ve worked as a freelance legal writer for one of my clients for five years. Since I blog for them three times a week, I’ve had to be quite creative to keep their blog content relevant, consistent, and timely.
Keeping a Law Blog Fresh
Below I’ve made some recommendations about topics to consider posting on your blog; this is not to say that everything you write about has to fall under one of these categories, but keeping the general focus of your blog on the end reader’s needs most of the time will set you up for success.
Mapping out your content concepts in an editorial calendar can help keep your law blog on track so that you gain the continuous benefits of search engine optimization. Keeping your legal blog fresh could also be accomplished by outsourcing the work to an experienced freelancer.
Pressing, Newsworthy Topics
If a new government study comes out about car accidents or if a new law passes surrounding estate planning, those can be relevant topics for a legal blog based on your practice area.
As a legal writer, I always keep my finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the world of my clients. Many of them also pass on relevant timely topics in their local area so that these can be incorporated into the blog.
Since you’re already plugged into your practice area, you can break down the complex topics related to news in your industry by spinning them for a consumer-facing audience in your law firm’s blog.
Questions Clients Would Ask
As an attorney, you have a front row seat to many of the most important questions potential clients would have, because they’ll ask you these questions on the phone, in emails, or in initial consultations.
Popular law firm blogs often succeed because their blogs are written based on questions and concerns that clients have in their current legal situation. These are not considered legal advice, particularly if you are referencing statutes and other information while requesting that the reader contact your office if they have more questions.
Common Myths or Misconceptions
One of the best ways to distinguish your firm from the many websites offering information about the law is to explain common concerns or inaccurate impressions.
For example, many people might be under the impression they can discharge federal student loans in bankruptcy. A bankruptcy attorney’s blog might cover this topic in full, building trust and confidence with the reader.
As a practicing attorney, you’ve probably come across these different myths many times and can draw upon this experience to generate some ideas for your law blog.
Information to Prepare Them for Meeting with a Lawyer or Filing
You can accomplish two things at once by explaining how your clients can best prepare for their impending legal process and meetings with you. Great topics under this umbrella include:
- What to do before….
- How to file a….
- Do you need an attorney to
- When should you hire a lawyer for your X case?
