I need a job to get to Gibraltar but I cannot get a job without being there – urgh!

Every day we are approached by people who want to work in Gibraltar but are caught in a catch 22 situation in that many jobs require you to be here to apply but they cannot move here without a job. I am sure it is not really any consolation to know you are not alone but it is true and many overcome this hurdle.
The type of jobs that come without a relocation package and thus you need to already be here, tend to be the generic roles such as administration, reception or secretarial roles or the more junior roles. The reason that clients want people who are already here is they are reluctant to pay relocation for someone junior and also that for the generic skill sets there tend to be a fair amount of people already here with that skill set anyway. “But I do not want a relocation package†I hear you say so refer to the second half of my previous sentence for the answer.
So what is the answer?
There are a few ways that we have used over the years to help people get jobs when they are not living in Gibraltar. The first is that you save enough money so you can survive, without working for a few months and hope that you get a job in that time. If you are going to do this, do not come in December or January as the job market is very quiet here! Once here you need to network like crazy and get out and meet contacts.
Another way is that you contact us and commit to flying down to the area, for a week and see what roles are available at that time. If you are going to do this, please give us a few weeks’ notice so we can prepare your CV and send it off to relevant companies. You may have a small problem if they wish to see you for a second interview outside of the week you are here but this is part of your decision.
The final way is to commit to being able to fly down for interview on 2 days’ notice, in case you are called for interview. This means regardless of price and holiday entitlement, you need to be able to drop everything and get here. We will let you know how many people, we think are being interviewed and your potential for success so at least you know where you stand, before flying down.
Being locally based when looking for a job in Gibraltar increases your chances of success by about 90% but obviously you have to take a chance by doing so. So the question remains, how badly do you want to change your life? We are happy to help so contact us today and see how we can help make your dreams come true.

9 å¹´Very helpful Ian. I came in month December to Gib which didn't stop me from finding a job in about 2-3 weeks time ;) so my advice in the end: if you want something, go and get it :p

9 å¹´Great article and I've also been in the exact situation, just in a different city. I had to take my savings and move. Then after I arrived I spent my days applying for every job I could find and eventually I had to take something since my savings ran out. If you have the skills put in the time, your resumes are prepped and critiqued, you should be able to find something within 3 months, whether it's something you want or not. FYI the first thing you need to do once you make the move is change your phone number to a local number.
