The dentist has finally flipped her open/closed sign to “open,” and she has her eyes set on a new patient: the AEW TBS and NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, Mercedes Moné. And rightfully so, I might add. Britt Baker, D.M.D., stepped away from the ring in September 2023, leaving fans eagerly anticipating her return. She didn’t come back when we merely wanted her to; she came back when we needed her. Now, Moné might have some serious challenges ahead.
This article is coming out before Britt Baker’s first promo back tonight, and I’m sure she will address a lot of questions — one of which being: why Mercedes Moné? Why now? It’s no secret that fans have been eagerly waiting for Baker’s return, and right now, Moné is the hottest thing since sliced bread. It only makes sense. The real question, though, is whether Baker will come back as a face or a heel.
During an episode of Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray suggested how Baker should be presented and how she could use the fans to her advantage. He proposed that now would be a great time for Baker to return as a face, cutting a promo among the crowd, allowing Moné to witness firsthand how a face can win over the fans with their support and ultimately reclaim what she feels she deserves.
Interestingly, Baker has never held the TBS Championship but has held the AEW Women’s World Championship, currently in the hands of “Timeless” Toni Storm. So, again, why Mercedes?
It didn’t take long for Moné to realize that with two belts on her shoulders, she now carries a large target on her back. During the Forbidden Door media scrum, Moné was asked about Baker’s grand return. Surprisingly, she didn’t hold her tongue or spare any feelings.
Well, I know a certain bitch wanted to come out and decided to steal my spotlight tonight, right? But that’s not gonna happen because I’m gonna party all night long and show her that I am Mercedes Moné for a reason, and there’s a price to pay when you interrupt me. Tonight was about me and my celebration. Who the hell does Britt Baker think that she is?
She continued:
She wants to show up to my show? I understand that she is the first-ever women’s signing here in AEW, but Tony, am I correct that I am the biggest free agent that you’ve ever signed here. So this Wednesday at Dynamite, to any woman who wants to come out here and steal my spotlight, it’s on.
You all know I love Mercedes Moné. The CEO has accomplished everything she set out to do and more. She defeated Willow Nightingale for the TBS Championship, despite many people favoring Nightingale. She also triumphed over Stephanie Vaquer for the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship, and let’s be honest, Vaquer gave her the BUSINESS the entire match. But claiming show she has been on for only 2 seconds? That’s something I know Baker won’t take kindly to.
There might be a lot of things wrong with wrestling these days, but they’ve nailed one thing: the women’s division. These ladies are kicking ass everywhere — from AEW to WWE, NJPW, CMLL, Stardom, Sukeban, WOW, and beyond. Now’s the time to sink your teeth into women’s wrestling and celebrate those who’ve paved the way and are still grinding out paths for the future. AEW’s women’s division is a powerhouse, stronger than ever. I can’t wait to see how this feud between Baker and Moné unfolds and just how far they’re willing to go to one-up each other. Will there be steel chairs? Maybe! Glitter bombs? Hopefully! Only time will tell, and I’m here for every dramatic, high-flying second.
