For years I drank coffee for different reasons.

I love the taste and the ceremony of making and drinking my coffee. Also, I felt like this is the only way to push through a workday or even cheer myself up in the morning.

I often almost slept away on long drives so I needed to stop every longer trip (1-3 hours) to have some coffee at the servo. I had sleeping issues, only was able to sleep 3-6 hours at night.

Last year our coffee consumption peaked after a trip to Vietnam when we found ourselves drinking 5-6 shots a day. Also, I noticed we have low energy pretty quickly after a coffee.

So we put on our thinking cap with Mel and decided it has to be stopped now because it's actually holding us back.

As we still wanted to have our coffee time in the morning we switched to decaf. Fortunately, we found an awesome cafe near us that makes beautiful decaf.

?? The first 1-2 week was terrible, I felt like I can't function without caffeine but pushed through and after the 2 weeks my energy levels bounced back way higher than I expected.

?? The first thing I noticed, I no longer need to rest or drink coffee even on a 3hr+ drive. Second, my sleeping time improved, and I don't have downtime during the day. My energy levels are pretty constant during the day.

? These are just our findings, nothing scientific, so I started to read about it more to figure out why everyone pushing coffee as a healthy drink, whereas it's obviously unhealthy for me.

--------------------------

?? I found something interesting about the topic.

??There are people who are fast metabolizers and there are slow metabolizers in the case of caffeine. This means slow a metabolizer has less from the enzyme that breaks down caffeine.

?? fast metabolizers: the body breaks down caffeine quickly so all the antioxidants and good things benefiting their body and protects against free radicals

?? slow metabolizers: the body breaks down caffeine slowly so it hangs around longer in their body causing health problems

--------------------------

?? What is the takeaway here?

Good nutrition must always need to be based on outcomes and not beliefs. Maybe it's worth getting rid of caffeine altogether to feel more energized.

At the moment I drink regular coffee occasionally, around once every fortnight. And have decaf every day (it's also a really good placebo :D) and feels like this was a great decision to make

Great article Barnabas Nagy. Caffeine has a half life of about 5hrs. Hence it can get in the way of a good night's sleep!
