I love mentoring...sometimes...

When it comes to mentoring others, is mentoring a nice to have or a must have? For a long time in my career I struggled mightily with this. Not because I didn't do it and not because I didn't enjoy or get benefits from mentoring others, but because of the potential drain and downsides as well.
And is there a moral obligation for you to mentor if people are asking you to, especially people from underprivileged or underrepresented groups to which you may belong or support? And does fulfilling this obligation, moral or otherwise, put you at a career disadvantage in some respects?
Are there ways to mentor smarter and better so everyone benefits, including us? I believe that doing a service for someone out of resentment in the long run is neither a service to them or to us or to the organization.
I cover this in the first of a new video series I'm launching as part of the Everybody Thrives program called "3 Minute Mastery." It's called "The Mentor's Dilemma."
Let me know your thoughts and experiences when it comes to mentoring and any feelings you may have, positive, negative, or otherwise towards this important topic.
Thanks!

5 个月Mentoring can be challenging but it is necessary to bring those developing their careers along the road to success, whatever that may be for them. What may be more useful is hiring coaches to mentor instead of having leadership so it. There are so many challenges and sometimes an objective perspective is more helpful.
