What if we embraced failure? What would our lives look like? Instead of looking for opportunities to succeed we pursued opportunities to fail? Sure, we learn a lot from our successes but most of our wisdom is gained from our failures. We know not to touch a hot stove once we’re burned, we know to try and go the speed limit once we get a ticket, and we know that preparation sets us up for success but only after learning that procrastination doesn’t always work. I learned a valuable lesson of not wearing cuffed pants with high heels while carrying coffee because the end result is a face plant in the hallway of your office building and coffee painting the white walls. So why do we hate our failures so much?
I’m proposing a call to action. Instead of shaming yourself, judging yourself, or mentally beating yourself down for perceived losses, failures, mistakes, start to look at them as your diamonds and precious stones and flaunt them. If we’re able to wear them like our own badge of honor we can learn to embrace them and let go of the fear that comes with making the same failure again. We can also empower others to take risks and make mistakes so they can create something greater than before.
In the words of Alanis Morisette, “you live, you learn, you love, you learn, you lose you learn”. Failing has a greater impact on us than our success because it’s our launch pad to success. So get out there and fail today. Do something that scares you. Say yes instead of no. Failure looks great on you darling! Let your mistakes shine!
