“I left my stable job to chase my dream and it changed everything”. How Caitlin Keating became a breakout documentary filmmaker
Have you ever been in a comfortable job, but craved something more for your career??
Before Caitlin Keating founded Wise Fool Films and created her first documentary, Netflix’s hit “Take Care of Maya”, she was a producer for People magazine’s “People TV”. Caitlin had worked her way up at the company from freelance reporter (a role she called a “dream come true”) to staff writer to producer.?
When she became a producer, everything shifted. Keating met former CEO of Time Inc., Rich Battista, who became a mentor, started a human interest series on People TV, and discovered a new passion.
“That's when this light bulb just went okay Caitlin. This is something you're really enjoying. This is making you feel excited,” Caitlin said.
But because of budget constraints, Caitlin couldn’t create the video projects that she was passionate about. “I just remember going home feeling so defeated, being like, I can't wait another month, year, five years, ten years, I need to make this happen on my own,” she said.?
“I loved my job…but I had reached the ceiling,” Caitlin said. “It was time to move on. I started to realize that what I really wanted to do was make documentaries.”?
When she decided to leave though, a “paralyzing” fear sank in about her future — and how she would survive financially.?

“But I realized this was the move I had to make when the fear of staying outweighed the fear of leaving,” Caitlin said. “The fear of actually quitting my job wasn't nearly as scary as staying in a position that I became so comfortable doing.”
Caitlin consulted with her mentor, set a plan in place, and decided to take a leap of faith that was a game changer for her career.?

1 年Wonderful!!! Years ago my father said, "...Wendy, when you get up in the morning and think twice about going to work, it's time for a change." I have found that when folk follow their PASSION vs. status, income, and/or visibility the success is enormous!

1 年I had to walk away from this post... I had to think... What stood out for me was how Caitlin Keating didn't do it alone. She did it - her transition from her secure position into something that allowed more freedom of expression - in community. She found a mentor that was supportive and sustained her in reaching out for something more, something different. This relationship (mentor/mentee) is the basis of the apprenticeship model that was the guiding principle in skill development in many Indigenous cultures. In some nations, it fell upon the shoulders of the older generation to identify the skills and talents of the up-and-coming generation. Their parents were too busy with the daily tasks of living and community. However, elderly individuals (grandparents) had time to observe, identify, and connect. That was their role: to match the child with someone in the community who could share the traditions of the people. If a child was good at memorization, they'd be connected with the storyteller. If the child had a propensity towards detail recognition required of identifying plants, they'd be connected with the herbalist. Caitlin sought out her own match and achieved success through this time-honored tradition: mentorship.
