I Learned The True Value Of Giving

I Learned The True Value Of Giving

We all have lessons learned from childhood that stick with us throughout life. Here is one of mine:

I came from a modest family in India. I remember a time when it was routine for my cousin and me to split mangos whenever either of us got one. It was rooted in what our family believed– if we had the ability to give, we did.

I carry that mentality with me to this day.

Whether it is sharing a mango as a child or giving to a person in need now, these small acts of generosity stick with people.

And nothing makes me more proud than realizing these acts affect the next generation. My daughter has seen the impact of giving and has grown accustomed to it. So much so she goes out of her way to be kind to others.

As I learned from my parents, she has learned from hers.

So what does this have to do with you, you might be wondering?

It's important to realize that giving is a two-way street. It's a powerful way to express kindness. But it is more than just dollars, toys, or donations and it benefits more than those who are just directly receiving the gift.

Inherently by giving, we often feel like we're only doing something for someone else, but I believe that the power in service comes from what one learns during that experience.

It is an exercise in empathy for you and always teaches a lesson you and those around you can learn.

You might think that giving is only for the good of the one receiving the gift, but quickly you will realize it benefits you, the recipient, and everyone learning from the experience.

In other words… Give for yourself and see the impact you make.
