I'm looking for insight from some specific groups of people which I'll tell you more about once I've outlined why I'm after this help!
Changing career; easy right?
Ever said (or thought) any of these things:-
- I'd love to change career but I just don't know what I'd do
- I'd love to change career but I'm too long in the tooth now
- I'd love to change career but I don't have the time or money to retrain
- Oh its just a midlife crisis, I'll get over feeling peed off with work
- I'm so done with work
Research conducted last year by Investors in People found that an overwhelming 47% of people in the UK are looking to change jobs in 2018, and 1 in 4 people are unhappy at work. Yet, often these feelings and searches remain just that; unhelpful emotions and half-hearted job seeking, (and sometimes a bit of whinging about work dare I say).
I did my own survey recently on what would help or hinder those looking to change career, and here's what I found out...
41% of respondents said they'd like do something completely different to what they're doing now
25% said they'd change something like working hours or location
34% said they'd like to start their own business
When I asked what is currently stopping them from making a move, this is what they told me:
67% said lack of money or fear of having no money
17% said lack of self belief or confidence
16% said fear of 'the unknown'
I then asked, what would provide a proverbial rocket up the whatsit to make a move, responses included; some sort of cash windfall like redundancy or lottery win, a clear plan with expert support - maybe a transition plan, something that forced me to reevaluate life - such as illness, and certainty that I'd be successful the new career.
Changing career therefore is not as easy as submitting CVs, turning up for a few interviews and the like, and I believe it starts with our mindset....which is where you and your network come in.
I'm working with a small group of amazing people to bring a new product to the world this Autumn; a programme that will inspire and equip people to begin their career change journey. To make this as full an experience as possible, the research help I'm looking for is this: -
- People over 40 who've made a career move, be that to something different, or change of dynamics such as working patterns or environment in their current field
- People born between 1993-1996 - I'm keen to understand more about your mindset about careers
- Companies or individuals who can give easy to understand and useful advice on the financial considerations of making (sometimes radical) career changes, e.g. tax, raising funds
If it's you, send me a message via Linked In. Also, if it's not you, please share my post as I know you're out there somewhere!
Thanks :-)
