“I knew you’d be a perfect fit.” Build that BIG reputation to start that BIG conversation.

“I knew you’d be a perfect fit.” Build that BIG reputation to start that BIG conversation.

We made the decision to sell our boat this summer. Took all the pictures, wrote the ad detailing all of its awesomeness and put it up on all the sale sites.

Lots of inquiries. Lots of shares.?

Then I got a message from a friend, letting me know he was interested.

“Awesome, meet you at the landing this weekend for you to test it out?”

While we were out on the water, he shared something that really struck me.

‘You know this is just a formality, right?’

Huh?

“I’m pretty positive I would’ve bought the boat even without the test run. I mean, I KNOW you. I know how meticulous you are, how much you love this boat, how trustworthy you are. I knew that it would be even better in person than the pictures and description- because that’s how you do everything.”

I was so touched. Being seen feels good.

Building your audience and finding right-fit people is about far more than filling a pipeline of potential clients. It’s about building a BIG reputation that is 100% YOU. And done right, it may lead exactly there.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of our conversation on the lake when I got a DM from someone a few days later. She was asking whether I had a spot open for a monthly messaging client.

She paid in full before our first call.

“I follow you on Facebook and LinkedIn, I’ve been on your email list for months, I subscribe to your newsletter, and I’ve read what others have said about you,” she told me over Zoom.?

“I already knew you’d be a perfect fit for me.”

That right there. It’s what messaging done right is all about.?

It’s about showing up in a big way, 101% as yourself, so that folks can truly get to know and trust you.

It’s about giving folks the information they need to make a decision and take action–and positioning yourself as the obvious choice.

It’s about calling in YOUR people so that things feel good and downstream rather than heavy and complicated.?

Because when it’s done right, messaging isn’t about chasing. Convincing. Proving. Hell, it’s not even about selling (sales happen organically when the rest is dialed in).

Three Quick Tips to Sound like YOU in your messaging:

  1. Embrace your voice. Write, record, or chat like you would actually speak. Don’t shy away from quirks, humor, or personal style. If your brand is a little irreverent? Pull it in to your messaging. Are you serious MOST of the time? Your brand’s voice should be, too.
  2. Share your stories. We’ve had countless folks in the last few months share how much they appreciate what we’re doing with our messaging lately. The only shift: We’re sharing stories from our actual lives. Believe me, people can spot the difference between an AI-generated tale and a story from your own life a mile and a half away.
  3. Stay true to your values. What drives you? What’s non-negotiable? Let your communication reflect those principles and beliefs, and the folks who align will know you’re a fit.
