I just want to talk to someone!
!!**WARNING**!! Sorry for the loads of questions in this article - but I just wanted to talk to someone!?
I absolutely LOVE having meaningful conversations! Yeah I am that person who would rather call instead of text (sorry to offend those 'let it go through to voicemail' types)
WHY? It's simple.... having conversations has changed my life Check out my recent article
BUT I AM WORRIED!!!!
As a society, we have never been more connected (Facebook, Slack, TikTok, Facebook workplace, Instagram, Email, etc), but is this awesome ‘connected’ world we live in actually making us more ‘disconnected’ in the way we meaningfully connect to build strong, nurturing and inclusive relationships?
I love using technology but when does it become the greatest challenge in our organisations instead of the greatest gift? Is it time to say techNOlogy more often (see what I did there)
Are we becoming a society of craving quick dopamine hits, even in the work environment?
Is our conversational muscle weakening at a time when our work (and life) need it most???
HYBRID WORKING
MENTAL HEALTH
YOUTH SUICIDE
LONELINESS
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
BULLYING & HARASSMENT
GENDER EQUALITY
Surely this is truly the time to understand that CONVERSATIONS MATTER & we all need to focus on being PRESENT with those in our world.
As we look at the new financial year ahead, have you and your business pulled a strategy together to create a culture underpinned by meaningful & impactful conversations.
Why is this critical in your thinking! A strong conversational muscle will see these things improve

2 年Great points Luke Cook and critical to address. I suspect that people are mentally exhausted and it feels like it’s going to take a lot of neural energy to have a chat - however, as we’re creatures that crave connection we need to get over this mental hurdle - conversations can be energising as you very well know! They can ignite ideas, motivate us and inspire us - all neurally energising! The second thing to keep in mind is that unfortunately pesky dopamine is taking centre stage with tech-addiction as it doesn’t feel like it’s using energy so feels like an easy and soothing choose but it is using neural energy … leading to more mental exhaustion … we need to make small shifts or nudges to get connected to humans again and have boundaries around our tech use. Otherwise we will become less and less capable of having decent conversations - that neural pathway will become unused …!
